Sam Knob is frequently windy especially compared to lower elevations so it is good to bring some layers on this hike even in summer.

This spot on the trail has a rocky outcrop, offering a view of the valley of the Middle Prong Wilderness. Many of the nearby wilderness trails are tucked in the trees so an open view is always welcome.

You can reach both sets of falls by walking down a small side trail (bushwhacking required at times) to the east. The falls are cascades and vary in strength depending on the time of year. There are multiple waterfalls on the Haywood Gap Trail, but these are the most impressive.
