May 25, 2023, Diablo Dropoff

Diablo Drop Off is a challenging section of off-road trail that staggers sharply down the face of a mesa. Here you get a great view of the Anzo-borrego Desert and its wondrous Ocotillo. While semi-succulent and a desert plant, Ocotillo is more closely related to tea and blueberries than to cactuses.

Just past the Palm Spring historical marker in the sandy wash is an iconic “Hollywood and Vine” street sign on the left side. It is one of many signs that were placed in the desert by James A. Jasper, a county supervisor for San Diego, during his tenure between 1895 and 1904. Primitive camping is also available in the area just up the hill.

You can expect trails to vary from gentle paths through lush meadows and deep valleys to challenging ascents over rocky, glacial terrain leading to high alpine lakes. What are some notable natural features or landmarks to look out for?

The Sawtooth Mountains are famous for their nearly 400 pristine high alpine lakes, carved by glaciers and nestled among granite formations. You'll also encounter dramatic jagged peaks, deep valleys with extensive tree stands, and lush grassy meadows. The area is also the headwaters for several major rivers. Keep an eye out for alpine wildflowers in July and August, which add vibrant color to the high meadows.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see while hiking?

The diverse ecosystems of the Sawtooth Mountains support abundant wildlife. Hikers often spot various fish species in the numerous lakes and rivers. Larger mammals like deer, elk, and mountain goats are present, and if you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a black bear or a cougar. What should I pack for a hike in the Sawtooth Mountains?

Given the variable mountain weather, it's essential to pack layers, including waterproof and windproof outer shells. Sturdy hiking boots, plenty of water, high-energy snacks, a map and compass (or GPS device), sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), and a first-aid kit are crucial. For longer or multi-day hikes, backpacking gear, a water filter, and bear-resistant food storage are also necessary. Always be prepared for sudden weather changes.
