December 28, 2025, Murphy Windmill

In the 1870s and 1880s, Golden Gate Park was planted on sand dunes and required substantial irrigation. In 1902, the Park Commission authorized the construction of two windmills to pump groundwater for park irrigation rather than purchasing water at exorbitant costs from the Spring Valley Water Company. The Murphy Mill was completed in 1908,[4] and pumped 40,000 US gallons (150,000 L) per hour to the park.

While the wide gravel fire road of Miwok Trail continues along the ridge, a singletrack Laurel Canyon trail drops to the east and Miwok Cutoff Trail to the west stays more on contour. Great views open up to the Bay and Mill Valley Bridge in the east.

About halfway paved, half gravel, the road continues past a vehicle gate as a biker/hiker-only trail, following the gradual valley curving down to the coast along a lush meadow with a little creek.

Starkly blue lake at the end of the valley narrowing here before reaching the beach. Surrounded by lush green grasses, bushes, and almost no trees.

At the end of the gradual Tennessee Valley Road, the last mile or so unpaved but smooth gravel, awaits the natural sandy wide beach cove. The steep coastal trails climbing on either side are hiking only.
