The Ihrlerstein quarries with Jurassic limestone and overlying chalk sandstone are the origin of the building blocks for numerous buildings of King Ludwig I (including the Kelheim Liberation Hall). The green sandstone mined in the quarry comes in 7 varieties, of which only 4 can be used for buildings. While the Jurassic quarry has long been abandoned, Regensburg green sandstone was mined for the construction of the New Pinakothek until the 1980s, for example. The green sandstone was also used in the Regensburg Cathedral and the Bavarian Lion in Lindau. The exposed profile shows 2 thick banks (3-4m each) of greenish sandstone with many thick-shelled mussels and an overlying 5-6m of thin-bedded lime sandstone. The quarry is heavily overgrown and the exposed profiles are only partially clearly visible. The small and large cow troughs are not natural ponds, but rather a clay pit from the 18th century. Because this soil does not allow water to pass through, a pond was created that used to provide water for people and especially animals. Since settlers used the forest as pasture, they called the watering hole “cow trough”.
