March 1, 2024, Rodman Mill Pond

This serene and picturesque pond, named after Robert Rodman, holds a significant place in Lafayette's history. In 1800, a cotton yarn spinning mill was constructed at this site, which later became a weaving mill that processed cotton into cloth. In 1847, Robert Rodman acquired the mill, and this tranquil pond was adjacent to the dye house. From here, you can catch a glimpse of the Annaquatucket River that feeds into the pond.

November 29, 2023, Hell's Half Acre

The New London Turnpike Road was an important piece of infrastructure when it opened in 1821 linking New York with Providence. Small settlements sprang up along the unpaved road to cater for the needs of travellers, but when it fell into disuse, the villages went the same way. That is except for Hell's Half Acre, a place full of taverns, sex workers, violence and murder. All that remains today are the foundations of the village and it is strange to think that this quiet, tree lined stretch of road had quite such a history.
