Next to the Walkiefer (originally an original, now a replica), a little further on, there is a bronze whale fluke sculpture next to the Vegesack ferry terminal. The fluke is the tail fin of a whale. In the pedestrian zone of Vegesack, you will also find a small bronze whale sculpture in memory of Vegesack's whaling tradition and a whale that once swam into the Weser.

The bridge is unfortunately no longer in operation due to technical problems, as far as shipping traffic is concerned. Pedestrians and cyclists can still cross the bridge, but larger boats can no longer approach or leave the museum harbor. Whether the bridge will be repaired again or if there will be a new bridge is not yet clear, but it would be desirable as part of the new city quarter on the east side and in the interest of the museum harbor.

Actress Friederike Becht uttered a remarkable sentence in an interview with the Catholic News Agency when asked what role God plays in her life: "I think everyone is entitled to believe what they think is right – as long as it doesn't hurt anyone and as long as they respect what others believe. I BELIEVE THAT WHAT NONE OF THE POSSIBLE GODS WANT IS WAR. Personally, I like the basic Christian idea of charity..."

History Pedestrian bascule bridge over the harbor basin The Vegesack harbor with the Havenhaus in 1670 (detail of a painting) Old warehouse next to the harbor basin, today it houses the Vegesack Story House and a gallery See also: Modern times on the Weser The Vegesack harbor was put into operation in 1622/23. This makes it the oldest artificially created harbor in Germany. The decisive factors for the construction of this harbor were the increasing silting of the Weser, which made the transport of goods upstream to Bremen difficult or completely impossible, as well as the demand by Bremen shipowners for a repair and safe berth for their ships during the winter. As long as there was no such harbor, the ships had to survive the winter and the storms in river inlets and tributaries of the Weser. Numerous ships were therefore spread out along the entire course of the Weser from Bremen to the mouth of the Weser and offered easy targets for looters and thieves. Three places were particularly suitable for a port, namely Lesmerbrook ('Lesumbrok') on the left bank of the Lesum, Blomenthal ('Blumenthal') on the right bank of the Weser with its dike foreland (the so-called "Marschhörne") suitable for building a port, and Oumunder Depe ('Aumunder Tief'), also called "Dat Ole Deep" ('Altes Tief'), near Fegesacke ('Vegesack') at the mouths of the Schönebecker Aue and the Leessem ('Lesum') into the Weser. This had long been a preferred berth for ships due to its sheltered location. From 1588 onwards, several inspections of the Aumunder Tief were carried out by Bremen councillors, but it was not until 1618 - at the beginning of the Thirty Years' War - that the decision was made to build a harbour at Fegesacke, which at that time consisted of only a few houses, after renewed massive demands from the Bremen Shipwrights' Guild. Dutch experts were recruited to manage the construction, as the people of Bremen lacked experience in harbour construction. The site selected proved to be ideal for harbour construction: because the existing floodplain bed was deep, only a little additional earthwork was required; the clayey-loamy subsoil (created by sea deposits) proved to be solid.
