Great view of the Elbe and the mighty city walls of Tangermünde

The view of the old town of Tangermünde is one of the most impressive cityscapes in Northern Germany. Especially from the meadows between the Tanger and the Elbe, a wide view opens up onto the well-preserved silhouette of the medieval town: red brick buildings, towers, and the mighty city wall stand out picturesquely against the sky. Particularly striking is the towering castle complex, which presides over the town and underscores its historical significance.

Tangermünde is a true gem on the Elbe Cycle Path: a beautiful old town, lots of brick Gothic architecture, and views of the Elbe. The route is flat, well-maintained, and ideal for relaxed cycling right along the river. Perfect for a break with a café stop and a stroll through the historic streets. 🚴♂️

The rectangular tower was built around 1300. The round tower and central section were built around 1450 and flank a pointed-arch passageway. The round tower features a projecting battlement. The more elaborate design of the round tower, the central section, and the top of the rectangular structure corresponds to the construction period around 1450 and was probably initiated by Stephan Buxtehude, to whom the Uenglinger Gate in Stendal and the Elbe Gate in Werben are attributed. The round tower is decorated with glazed bricks arranged in spiral or zigzag patterns, a molded stone frieze depicting the head of Medusa, and varied blind decorations. The plaster blinds above the gate passage bear coats of arms painted in 1897: Prussian Eagle, Imperial Eagle with the applied Hohenzollern Shield, Tangermünde Eagle, Eagle of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, Brandenburg Eagle. The Roland in Buch has an adventurous history: Around 1580, a 3.50 m high sandstone sculpture was erected on the Buch market square. It probably replaced an older wooden Roland figure. When the town hall was built, the Roland moved around 1680. When the town hall tower collapsed (just three years later), the sculpture was smashed and had to be reconstructed. In a major fire in 1690, the Roland lost his head, which was replaced by the current head - which is not true to the original. In 1693, the sculpture was given its current location.
