A very beautiful viewpoint. We used the short circular trail to acclimatize/prepare for Cerro Chirripó, as you're at a very high altitude. Due to the altitude, it can be chilly and windy; we were there in April, and a sweater was sufficient. I can definitely recommend visiting the volcano in the morning. Between 8 and 10 a.m., there are hardly any people there, and the sky is usually still clear at this time. Clouds usually move up the mountain from mid-morning onward. The view is magnificent; however, the turquoise lakes aren't visible during the dry season; they're probably only full during the rainy season. There's a small restaurant that leaves nothing to be desired; all in all, it's fantastic.

The place is very spacious, it is recommended to go in summer for good photos, completely pedalable. You can see the video "Basilica de los Angeles" on our Official Channel "BIKERS COSTA RICA" https://www.facebook.com/reel/1191863962050845

The Durán Sanatorium, an amusement park and ghost hotel, is also today a recreational park and was previously a sanatorium created to house and treat patients suffering from tuberculosis, it had all the characteristics of a first world hospital.

No matter how you drive the track, at the end you have to struggle up a mega steep "ramp". I had to push my touring bike with 4 bags for a very long time; but it was worth it.

The best thing is to drive up there as early as possible to be away from the big wave of visitors. It's also much fresher up there than better to take a jacket with you ;-)

Pacayas, Costa Rica, offers a variety of attractions. Highly recommended are the Main Crater of Irazú Volcano, known for its impressive views and unique acid lake, and the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, a significant cultural and religious site. Visitors also enjoy Sanatorio Durán, a historical site now functioning as a recreational park, and the scenic Orosi Valley.
The region is rich in natural beauty. You can visit the Main Crater of Irazú Volcano, the highest volcano in Costa Rica, offering panoramic views. The Orosi Valley provides stunning landscapes for cycling and viewing. Additionally, Finca Aigazu, a natural sanctuary, features access to the Virris River and scenic viewpoints.
Yes, Pacayas and its surroundings are home to several historical and cultural landmarks. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels is a prominent religious building. The Sanatorio Durán, a former tuberculosis sanatorium, is now a recreational park with a rich history. You can also find the Cathedral of Cartago and the historic Ruinas de Ujarrás in the broader region.
The Pacayas area is excellent for outdoor enthusiasts. You can find numerous opportunities for hiking, running, and cycling. For detailed routes and guides, explore the Hiking in Pacayas, Running Trails in Pacayas, and Cycling in Pacayas guides.
Absolutely. For instance, near the Main Crater of Irazú Volcano, there's an easy 4.39 km loop trail. Other trails in the region range from moderate to difficult, such as the 17.1 km 'Haunted Tree – Cabeza de Vaca Trail Viewpoint loop'. You can find more options in the Hiking in Pacayas guide.
Yes, cycling is a popular activity. The region offers challenging routes like the 56.3 km 'Cartago Farmers Market – Las Quebradas loop' and various other loops around Oreamuno. For more cycling routes and their difficulties, refer to the Cycling in Pacayas guide.
Pacayas provides several running trails. You can find moderate routes like the 13.2 km 'Running loop from Oreamuno' or a shorter 5.6 km 'Running loop from Paraíso'. For a more challenging run, consider the 19 km 'Ruinas de Santiago Apóstol loop'. Discover more trails in the Running Trails in Pacayas guide.
Yes, several attractions are suitable for families. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, the Cathedral of Cartago, and Sanatorio Durán are all marked as family-friendly. Finca Aigazu also offers glamping and trails that can be enjoyed by families.
To fully appreciate the attractions, visiting during the 'summer' (dry season, typically December to April) is often recommended for better weather and clearer views, especially at the Main Crater of Irazú Volcano. Early mornings are ideal for visiting the volcano to avoid crowds and ensure stable weather conditions.
Given that the Irazú Volcano is over 3,400 meters high, it's essential to bring rain gear and warm clothing, even if the weather seems clear at lower elevations. Temperatures can be cool, and conditions can change rapidly.
The Irazú Volcano is unique for several reasons. It is the highest volcano in Costa Rica, and on a clear day, visitors can see both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean from its summit. Its crater also features a distinctive rain-fed acid lake, which often appears green.
While popular sites can attract visitors, exploring places like Finca Aigazu, a natural sanctuary with glamping and trails, might offer a more serene experience. The Ruinas de Ujarrás, though historic, might also provide a quieter cultural glimpse compared to more central attractions.
