Through the "Upper Gate" in the north and the "Lower Gate" in the south of Dillenburg, through traffic to the trade fair cities of Frankfurt (in the south) and Cologne (in the west) likely passed through even before the town was granted city charter (1344). The first major reconstruction work took place in 1594. Princess Isabella, wife of the last Prince Christian of Dillenburg, had the present building complex created in 1737 by structurally connecting the two buildings directly next to the gate. The Princess, who had quarreled with her husband, lived in this "city palace" until her death. Therefore, this building was also called "the Princess's House" and later, when several state authorities found accommodation there, the "College Building." The area around the Lower Gate was the residential area for members of the upper middle class in the 18th century. https://www.dillenburg.de/kultur-tourismus/erleben/historischer-weg/untertor/
