On January 6, 1940, Germany executed approx. 96 Poles, mainly from the Warsaw intelligentsia, in the Szwedzkie Mountains (currently Warsaw-Bemowo). This place, forgotten for years, is now commemorated by annual ceremonies organized by the IPN and local authorities at the monument at the intersection of Westerplatte and Zielony Przylądek streets.

The fountain at the intersection of Radiowa and Powstańców Śląskich streets in Bemowo is a popular resting place for residents. The facility, usually activated before the May holidays, offers illuminated water shows in a "checkerboard" form with 28 nozzles. The surrounding space has been revitalized (Generalski square) and equipped with benches.

The former village of Jelonki, where the estate is located, was annexed to Warsaw in 1951. In 1952, a barracks estate of "Polish-Soviet Friendship" was built on approximately 40 ha for several thousand Soviet builders of the Palace of Culture and Science. The owners of the land were expropriated in an accelerated procedure, offering compensation or replacement land near Warsaw or in the Recovered Territories. After the completion of the Palace of Culture and Science in May 1955, the estate was transferred by the city authorities to the Ministry of Higher Education for the purpose of student housing for Warsaw universities. In September 1955, approximately 3,000 students and academic staff moved in there. The estate was then given the name "Friendship". On the area of 32 ha, 33 student houses, 9 assistant hotels, 19 assistant blocks, 77 single-family houses for university employees and 2 workers' hotels were built.
