The Chapel of the Souls (Capela das Almas) was Viana's first mother church until the mid-15th century, when the Cathedral (Sé Catedral) was built within its perimeter. It is called the Chapel of the Souls because its churchyard served as a burial ground from the time of King Afonso III until the end of the 16th century. All that remains of the original 13th-century structure, when it was built (expanded in 1719), are an arcosol on the south side of the church and the cross with its headboard. It is a typical small church of the 18th-century Baroque style, but certainly worth seeing.

The complex is surprisingly large. You can walk along the entire fortress wall, offering new views every time. There's no admission charge.

The former hospital ship of the cod fleet is now a museum ship. The entrance fee of €5 per person is absolutely reasonable. For that, you get to see a lot of interesting things. The tour provides a very thorough explanation of life and technology on board. An audio guide is available as a helpful supplement. Much of the interior is still preserved. Absolutely worth seeing.

The former hospital ship is now a museum. The entrance fee (5 euros per person, September 2025) is well worth it. For that, you can walk through the entire ship and get a good impression of the conditions and technology of the time.
