Many trails cross each other and the junctions aren't well marked. I recommend using a turn-by-turn GPS, especially if you're trying to get to the estate ruins.

This is the walled garden that is part of the Knollwood Estate (highlight for the estate is here: https://www.komoot.com/highlight/3154129). There is a picture of what the estate and garden looked like in the early 20th century: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8375/8526760216_d9d2dae31f_o.jpg The garden is in the upper right corner of the picture.

The estate was initially built between 1906-1920 for Wall Street mogul Charles Hudson, but was famously sold in 1951 to King Zog of Albania, who was living in exile. Zog never occupied the mansion (he sold it just 4 years later), but local rumor had it that he'd hidden some treasures on the grounds of the estate. As the estate fell into disrepair, looters and vandals looking for treasure added to its destruction. Eventually the village of Muttontown had the mansion torn down for safety reasons. Eerie ruins of a double staircase and garden kiosks remain. This link is a picture of what the estate looked like when Zog intended to make it his home: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8375/8526760216_d9d2dae31f_o.jpg

Yes, the area is well-suited for families as most trails are rated easy. Massapequa Preserve offers gentle, scenic paths along the water that are great for all ages. For a straightforward and shorter walk, consider the Nassau County Basin #418 loop from Old Bethpage.
Muttontown Preserve is the best choice for a hike through history. The trails there lead to the fascinating ruins of the Knollwood Estate, once owned by King Zog of Albania. Exploring the graffiti-covered pillars and grand staircase offers a unique experience you won't find on other local trails.
Dog policies vary between parks. Coffin Woods is a popular local spot known for being very dog-friendly. In larger state parks and preserves, dogs are often required to be on a leash. Always check the specific park's regulations before you and your furry friend head out.
The hiking here offers a peaceful escape into nature, characterized by lush woodlands, freshwater wetlands, and paths alongside creeks and ponds. For beautiful water views, especially at sunset, the trails in Massapequa Preserve are an excellent choice. For a more hilly experience with harbor vistas, head to Cold Spring Harbor State Park.
The terrain around New Cassel is generally gentle, with most trails being easy or moderate. If you're looking for a longer or more strenuous outing, Bethpage State Park offers an extensive network of paths, including a section of the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail, that allows you to cover more ground.
The local landscape is primarily composed of woodlands, ponds, and gentle creeks, so you won't find any significant waterfalls on the hiking trails in this immediate area.
You'll find a mix of trail types. Many preserves, like Massapequa and Muttontown, feature both paved multi-use paths and natural dirt trails. The paths are generally well-maintained, but dirt trails can become muddy after rain, so wearing appropriate footwear is recommended.
Most of the popular routes in the area are loops, making for a convenient hike. The Muttontown Preserve loop via The Walled Garden — Huntington is a highly-rated circular trail that takes you through woodlands and past a historic garden.
Locals and visitors have several top-rated options for hiking:
Muttontown Preserve: Nassau County's largest preserve, famous for its blend of nature and history, including the Knollwood Estate ruins.
Massapequa Preserve: A serene escape with beautiful water views along Massapequa Creek, ideal for easy walks.
Cold Spring Harbor State Park: Known for its hilly terrain and scenic vistas of the harbor.
Trail View State Park: Offers over 7 miles of trails connecting to other major parks in the area.
For a day hike, comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots are essential. Bring water and snacks, especially for longer routes. It's also wise to have insect repellent, particularly during warmer months, and to download your route map for offline use as cell service can be unreliable in some wooded areas.
The trails are well-regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 3.9 stars. Hikers often praise the peaceful woodland settings and the unique historical features found within the preserves.
