View of Kelheim's city gates

Highlight • Viewpoint

You will see the Altmühltor, the Donautor and the Mittertor, all of which were built in the middle of the 13th century.

In front of the Altmühltor there was a spacious gatehouse, which was demolished in May 1875. This created a spacious space between the gate and the former bridge over the Altmühl. The Mittertor is the western entrance gate to Kelheim's old town and part of the former city fortifications. On its north side, the Donautor bears the first city coat of arms with the city gate and the Bavarian Wecken and, like the Altmühl- and Donautor, allows entry into the old town.

From the 15th century, the Donautor was the seat of the paving duties. If you drive along the Danube Cycle Path, Kelheim is well worth a visit.

The city of Riedenburg is located in the Altmühltal between Kehlheim and Beilngries. The Altmühl Panoramaweg leads directly through the recognized health resort. In a historic setting (first mentioned in 1111), the traveler can spend a break here and strengthen themselves. Museums, churches and other attractions delight the culturally interested. A special highlight is the medieval festival, which takes place every two years. For the maintenance of the fluid balance, the two local breweries offer themselves.

Tatzlwurm Bridge, Essing

Highlight • Bridge

The popularly called "Tatzelwurm" bridge over the Main-Danube Canal at Essing was until 2006 the longest wooden bridge in Europe with a length of 190 meters.
The striking architecture is worth seeing and the crossing by bike is in a good mood.

Hall of Liberation, Kelheim

Highlight • Monument

The Liberation Hall, which towers over Kehlheim on Michelsberg, can be seen from afar. It is not located directly on the Panoramaweg, but since it starts or ends directly in Kehlheim, you should take some time to visit the monumental memorial. King Ludwig I had the building built in the middle of the 19th century. From the viewing terrace, which can be reached via a lift or 125 steps, you have a fantastic view of the Danube, Altmühl and Kehlheim. Inside the magnificent building you can marvel at 34 goddesses of victory made of Carrara marble.

Opening times (ticket sales until 5:15 p.m.): Monday to Sunday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A small restaurant in the immediate vicinity also invites you to linger.

The Kuchlbauer brewery has created something very special here, because in "Kuchlbauer's Beer World" beer and art are brought together. On a tour you can not only see the brewery, but also what is probably the last building of the famous artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

The Kuchlbauer Tower was built according to the artist's designs. For him, straight lines were something ungodly and so a beautiful 35-meter-high tower was created that captivates every viewer.

On a brewery tour you will not only be introduced to the art of brewing, you will also be given insights into the life of the legendary wheat beer dwarves or the secret of the Last Supper. A tour always ends with a beer tasting.

July 23, 2023, Tatzlwurm Bridge, Essing

One might think that a dragon is winding its way from one bank to the other here. But what you see here is not a creature sprung from a fantasy novel, but a wooden footbridge that connects the two riverbanks of the Main-Danube Canal. With its 193 meters in length, it can proudly claim to be one of the longest wooden bridges in Europe. Beautiful views of Essing, the Randeck castle ruins, and the river landscape are guaranteed from the bridge. And with a little luck, a ship will pass under the bridge just as you are standing on it enjoying the view. On the other side are the Klausenhöhlen caves, which are part of the Altmühltal archaeological park and served as a dwelling for Neanderthals. During the construction work of the Main-Danube Canal, the crossing to the other bank was interrupted. Since this could not remain the case, the construction company Rhein-Main-Donau AG had to come up with something. The plan was that an almost 200-meter-long bridge should be built in the unique landscape of the Altmühl valley. In the end, the unusual bridge construction by architect Richard Johann Dietrich was chosen, which is characterized by a special lightness and a curved design. After seven years of planning and development work, and with the help of engineering and modern timber construction technology, the unusual bridge structure could be realized. https://www.herzstueck.bayern/attraktion/holzbruecke-tatzlwurm-200e691cf1

Kehlheim has some city gates worth seeing. From there you have a beautiful view of the city. Kehlheim has a beautiful old town with Renaissance facades. And it has lots of pubs and beer gardens.

You must have seen that. The tower was not built the way Hundertwasser had actually planned it. Should be 70m high. But the church tower with 54m was of course the limit. And unfortunately Hundertwasser died in the planning phase. The project was completed by Peter Pelikan, Hundertwasser's architect.
