Built in 1920, Devil's Gate Dam is the oldest dam constructed by the Los Angeles County Flood Control District, designed to protect Pasadena, South Pasadena, and Los Angeles from floods. The dam was named after a rock formation resembling a devil’s face and gained popularity in the 1940s when occultists performed rituals there. Today, Devil's Gate Dam attracts hikers, paranormal investigators, and TV crews checking out its haunted reputation.

Devil's Gate Dam is an abandoned dam, close to Hahamongna Watershed Park. From the bridge you get an amazing view of the valley and the surrounding area. Below the bridge there are a couple of tunnels that might be the reason why this place is considered a portal to hell, giving the dam its name.

Yes, many trails in the area are dog-friendly, but they must be kept on a leash. Trails within Cherry Canyon Park and Hahamongna Watershed Park are popular choices for hiking with dogs. However, be aware that some areas, like Descanso Gardens, do not permit dogs, so it's always best to check specific park regulations before you go.
Absolutely. For a gentle and accessible outing, the trails within Hahamongna Watershed Park are a great option. The park offers wide, mostly flat paths through oak woodlands and native plants, with picnic areas available. It's a wonderful place for a relaxed family walk, as described in the Pasadena visitor guide.
For some of the best panoramic views, head to Cherry Canyon Park. The trails here climb into the San Rafael Hills, offering stunning vistas that can stretch from the San Gabriel Mountains to the ocean on a clear day. A popular viewpoint known locally as "Five Points" provides a rewarding 360-degree perspective.
Yes, the most well-known waterfall hike in the vicinity is the Switzer Falls Trail, located in the Angeles National Forest. This popular trail follows the Arroyo Seco through a canyon to a multi-tiered waterfall. Be prepared for some creek crossings, and note that the trail can get very busy, especially on weekends.
The best times to hike are during the spring and fall when temperatures are mild and pleasant. Spring often brings beautiful wildflower displays, especially from March to May. Summer can be very hot, so if you hike then, it's crucial to start early in the morning, bring plenty of water, and choose shaded canyon trails. Winter can also be a great time to hike, but be cautious of trail conditions after rain.
For a strenuous challenge, the hike to Mount Lukens via Earl Canyon Mountainway is an excellent choice. This difficult route involves significant elevation gain as it climbs into the Angeles National Forest, rewarding determined hikers with expansive views from the highest point within the Los Angeles city limits.
The area is highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.6 stars from over 90 reviews. Hikers often praise the variety of trails, from easy park strolls to rugged mountain climbs, and the beautiful scenery of the canyons and hillsides.
Layering your clothing is key, as temperatures can change quickly. Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, as many trails have loose dirt or rocky sections. Always bring more water than you think you'll need, especially on exposed trails. Sun protection, including a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, is essential year-round.
The Picnic area & Arroyo Seco loop from Montrose is a great moderate loop. This trail offers a varied experience, taking you through parts of the Arroyo Seco and offering pleasant spots for a break. It's a good way to explore the watershed area without having to backtrack.
It depends on the location. For trailheads within city parks like Cherry Canyon or Hahamongna Watershed Park, parking is typically free. However, if you are parking within the Angeles National Forest, such as for the Switzer Falls or Earl Canyon trails, you will likely need a National Forest Adventure Pass displayed in your vehicle. Always check the specific requirements for your chosen trailhead before you go.
For a quieter experience, consider exploring the Flint Canyon Trail. While still appreciated by locals, it tends to be less crowded than the main parks. It offers a relatively short but rewarding hike with lovely views, providing a sense of solitude close to the city.
