This section of the paved, multi-use Bird to Gird Trail includes Bird Point, a popular spot to watch the bore tide rolling in. However, you only get a distant view and it's hard to forecast how big the tide will or won't be.

The Rainbow Trailhead is one of two trailheads along the Turnagain Arm Trail that have no parking fee. The trail west of here starts out as an old road, then narrows a bit and goes through sporadic patches of mud and brush โ but it's still very much runnable. Heading east from here toward the other no-fee trailhead (Windy Corner) expect much more rocky conditions. Some runners will be comfortable keeping up the pace, while others might feel the need to slow down to keep from turning an ankle. As they say, your mileage may vary.

The Rainbow Trailhead is the first of two fee-free trailheads along the Turnagain Arm Trail; the other is Windy or Windy Corner to the southeast The Rainbow Trailhead is quite large, and I've never seen it completely full. The trail to head northwest toward McHugh Creek is very obvious, but the trail to continue toward Windy Corner is less obvious. It actually runs directly across the front of the parking area, climbing an incline to the right as you stand with your back to the road. The first stretch of that is often grassy and overgrown by midsummer, which makes it harder to spot.

The Bird Ridge Trail climbs sharply from the Seward Highway to gain glorious views across the Turnagain Arm and the surrounding mountains. It's a strenuous hike that's sure to blow away the cobwebs. Thanks to its south-facing nature, it is one of the first trails in the region to dry out in spring, making it a good early season objective.

Iconic rocks forming a peninsula along the Turnagain Arm. Good place to observe the bay, and the change of tides. A trail leads across the railway tracks, be careful.

After crossing the rails (watch out for any approaching trains), you can walk freely on the rocks or to the coast to admire the wonderful scenery of the Turnagain Arm. However, do not walk on the Watt at low tide, as the tide is faster. There is danger to life!
