This is the most easterly of four trailheads on the Turnagain Arm Trail. Parking here is fee, but the lot is very small, poorly marked, and easy to drive right park. The trail west of here, toward the next trailhead (Rainbow), is quite rocky. I give it about 50-50 odds that any given runner will feel comfortable running most of that terrain. You'll need solid ankles! However, once you pass the Rainbow trailhead the trail turns to packed dirt with only sporadic rocks, and is much better for running.

The Rainbow Trailhead is one of two trailheads along the Turnagain Arm Trail that have no parking fee. The trail west of here starts out as an old road, then narrows a bit and goes through sporadic patches of mud and brush โ but it's still very much runnable. Heading east from here toward the other no-fee trailhead (Windy Corner) expect much more rocky conditions. Some runners will be comfortable keeping up the pace, while others might feel the need to slow down to keep from turning an ankle. As they say, your mileage may vary.

If you turn south from here, you'll reach the McHugh Creek Trailhead, which has multiple tiers of parking for $5 (or an annual Chugach State Parks parking pass). The trail west of here, heading toward Potter Creek, generally offers the firmest footing of the entire Turnagain Arm Trail, although there may be some persistent patches of slick mud. Heading east of here toward the next trailhead, Rainbow, the trail gets a little narrower and footing is a little less stable, but still runnable.

This stretch of the Turnagain Arm Trail is particularly pretty in a stark way. The terrain is very rocky but strewn with wildflowers in the summer, and Dall sheep sometimes congregate in the nearby cliffs.

This trailhead, often just called "Windy," is a very small pullout right off the highway. It's hard to spot when driving, even when you know right where it is. However, the stretch of trail between here and the next trailhead of the Turnagain Arm Trail, Rainbow, is very pretty in a stark, rocky, and wildflower-strewn sort of way. Dall sheep sometimes congregate in the cliffs near here, too.

The Rainbow Trailhead is the first of two fee-free trailheads along the Turnagain Arm Trail; the other is Windy or Windy Corner to the southeast The Rainbow Trailhead is quite large, and I've never seen it completely full. The trail to head northwest toward McHugh Creek is very obvious, but the trail to continue toward Windy Corner is less obvious. It actually runs directly across the front of the parking area, climbing an incline to the right as you stand with your back to the road. The first stretch of that is often grassy and overgrown by midsummer, which makes it harder to spot.
