In 1985, Huis Hoope, now a national monument, was acquired by the Stichting Maatschappelijke Belangen (Social Interests Foundation). This foundation dates back to 1578 and is involved in, among other things, the renovation, restoration, and rental of historic buildings in Goes's city center. This monumental building on J.A. van der Goeskade was built in 1651. It is a building in the Classical Baroque style. The Sint Maartenspoort (St. Martin's Gate) stood between this house and the Kleine Kade. When this gate was demolished around 1863, 'Huis Hoope' became the bridge keeper's residence until the swing bridge over the harbor was replaced by a fixed bridge in 1939.
