Make sure to have a pass to enter the trail if you are going during “peak season” can be found on the national park service website. I underestimated the rock scramble. There were portions requiring us to be on our hands and knees, then full pull ups.

Hawksbill Summit in Shenandoah National Park offers stunning 360-degree views of the Shenandoah Valley, Blue Ridge Mountains, and Virginia Piedmont from its 4,050-foot elevation. As the park's highest point, it also marks the highest spot in Madison and Page counties. The north face drops 2,500 feet into Timber Hollow, the park’s largest elevation change. Hikers can also spot rare balsam fir trees at the summit. A stone observation platform, built by the National Park Service, enhances the experience's panoramic views.

Fishers Gap is at an elevation of 3,070 feet and gives you a view of the Shenandoah Valley. There is a parking lot right near the viewpoint, so there is a good chance there will be other people enjoying the view with you.

If you'd like to park your bike for a while and take a walk on the Appalachian Trail, this is a great place to do it. You also get a really nice view of the Shenandoah Valley through a gap in the trees, with Massanutten Mountain and New Market Gap—the site of a famous Civil War battle—visible in the distance.

Madison County is renowned for its beautiful waterfall trails within Shenandoah National Park. For a moderate hike that takes you past a series of cascades, the Rose River Falls loop is a fantastic 3.7-mile (6 km) option. The trail follows the river, offering multiple spots to enjoy the scenery.
While many trails in Shenandoah National Park are dog-friendly, some of the most popular routes within Madison County have restrictions.
Notably, dogs are not permitted on the Old Rag Mountain Summit via Ridge Trail loop due to the difficult rock scramble, or on the Dark Hollow Falls Trail. Always check specific trail regulations before you go.
The hiking here is classic Blue Ridge Mountains terrain. Expect forested trails, significant elevation changes, and rocky paths. Many routes lead to either stunning waterfalls along riverbeds or exposed, rocky summits with panoramic views. There are over 90 trails in the area, ranging from easy to difficult.
For some of the most dramatic and rewarding 360-degree views, the strenuous hike to Hawksbill Summit is hard to beat. As the highest peak in Shenandoah National Park, it provides an unparalleled perspective of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Yes, since the primary hiking areas are within Shenandoah National Park, you will need to pay an entrance fee. Additionally, for certain popular and strenuous hikes like Old Rag, a separate hiking permit is required in advance. Always check the official National Park Service website for the most current fee and permit information before your visit.
Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential due to the rocky and often steep terrain. You should also bring plenty of water, snacks, a map (as cell service can be unreliable), and layered clothing, as weather can change quickly in the mountains. A waterproof jacket is always a good idea.
Yes, the area is well-suited for backpacking. A challenging and popular option is the Whiteoak Canyon Trail, which can be combined with other trails to create a strenuous multi-day loop with significant elevation gain and beautiful scenery. Backcountry camping permits are required.
