Look out for an entrance onto a footpath on your right, which follows beside the railway tracks on your left, and the exe estuary on your right. The path is too narrow for cycling but great for walking and running.

A good few 'dings' of a bell will alert walkers in the tunnel if on your bike! If you don't have a bell - a big old 'Woo Woooo' will carry down the tunnel as well!

The region boasts incredibly diverse terrain. You'll find everything from the rugged moorlands and granite tors of Dartmoor and Exmoor to the dramatic cliffs of the Jurassic Coast. There are also gentle river valleys, extensive coastlines with sandy beaches, and flat, traffic-free paths along estuaries like the Exe Estuary. This variety means routes can range from easy, paved paths to difficult, unpaved segments.
Yes, South West England has many easy and family-friendly options. The Exe Estuary trail loop from Exeter to Exmouth is a largely flat, traffic-free path offering scenic views. Other popular traffic-free trails suitable for families include the Camel Trail in Cornwall and the Tarka Trail in North Devon, both following old railway lines.
For a challenge, consider routes that venture into the National Parks. The Plymouth to Tavistock loop on the Drake's Trail includes significant climbs, especially through Dartmoor National Park. Another demanding option is the Chew Valley Lake loop from Bristol, which features substantial elevation changes.
Many routes in South West England are designed as loops, offering a convenient way to explore. The Poole Harbour loop - Dorset takes you through coastal areas around the harbour. For a more rugged experience, the West Kernow Way: Penzance to Land's End Loop offers a challenging circular bikepacking route in wild West Cornwall.
The South West is renowned for its stunning coastlines. The Poole Harbour loop - Dorset offers beautiful coastal views. While not exclusively coastal, the Jurassic Coast in Dorset provides dramatic cliffs and coves like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, with many routes offering glimpses of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cornwall and Devon's coastlines also feature picturesque villages and rugged cliffs.
Beyond the natural beauty, many routes pass by significant landmarks. In Dartmoor, you might encounter impressive granite formations like Haytor Rocks or Hound Tor. The region also features historic cities like Bath and Bristol, charming villages, and attractions such as Corfe Castle and Old Harry Rocks. The Burrator Reservoir & Buckland Abbey loop on the Drake's Trail takes you past a beautiful reservoir and a historic abbey.
Many routes in South West England are accessible via public transport, especially those connecting major towns and cities. For example, the Bradford on Avon, Bath and the Two Tunnels Greenway connects two historic cities, both well-served by train. Similarly, the Exe Estuary trail loop is easily reached from Exeter and Exmouth train stations.
Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for touring cycling in South West England. The temperatures are mild, and the vibrant foliage adds to the natural beauty. While summer is also popular, routes can be busier. Winter cycling is possible, but be prepared for cooler, potentially wetter weather, especially in exposed moorland or coastal areas.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.5 stars from over 8,800 reviews. Reviewers often praise the region's incredible diversity, from the quiet lanes and stunning coastal views to the challenging climbs of the moorlands. Yes, some routes in the South West offer a varied surface experience. For instance, the route Towards Clevedon from Bristol - plenty of gravel is specifically noted for its gravel sections, providing a different kind of touring adventure. Many trails that follow disused railway lines or forest paths will also feature unpaved sections.
While many routes are day trips, some can be combined or are part of longer trails suitable for multi-day touring. The West Kernow Way in Cornwall, for example, is designed as a rugged bikepacking route. The Tarka Trail also offers a substantial 32-mile stretch, which can be incorporated into longer journeys through unspoiled countryside.
