Beautiful hike to the ruins of the Barrage de Malpasset. This is a former dam that suddenly and completely collapsed on the night of December 2, 1959. The flood destroyed several villages and cost 423 people their lives.

Dirt track, a little hilly, very busy, good for walking (gravel, VTC, mountain bike). Possibility of continuing north then west on the same type of track.

Superb site where you can admire the remains of the huge concrete blocks and the opening at the bottom of the dam 😳 Well shaded in the morning during my visit

Nice historic site for a walk in the massif with a view of the valleys which served as a reserve for the dam. Need to carry to pass behind the dam otherwise very rolling

Description source WIKIPEDIA https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrage_de_Malpasset "...The Malpasset dam is an arch dam, now in ruins, built on the Reyran, the last tributary on the left bank of the Argens. Its reservoir was to ensure the water supply to the agglomeration of Fréjus/Saint-Raphaël (Var), the surrounding communes and their agricultural plain. On December 2, 1959, five years after the end of its construction, intense precipitation caused the reservoir lake to flood and then the dam to rupture. The downstream surge of around fifty million cubic meters of water caused 423 deaths and considerable material damage, with roads, railways, farms and buildings destroyed. It is one of the greatest French civil disasters of the 20th century."....
