Great idea, a mast with a box and contents of a first aid kit.

The path there is technically easy but relatively steep. Orientation isn't easy, as several paths lead there, and they aren't well signposted. I first followed the red and then the yellow markings. The monastery itself is very beautiful. I was there on a Sunday and found the gates locked. Only a guard dog barked.

The ascent to the top of Mount Parnitha is a special experience for anyone who enjoys travelling on two wheels. The road winds its way up the mountain with a gentle, steady incline - not too steep, but challenging enough to keep your muscles moving. The asphalt is in good condition, which makes the ride pleasant as the landscape opens up around you. On your way up, you will be accompanied by the rough beauty of the rocks and the sparse vegetation. The isolated, wind-shaped trees that decorate the mountainside are particularly striking - they tell of the harsh climate up here. The curves keep offering new perspectives on the surrounding landscape and invite you to stop for a short while to enjoy the view. Once you reach the summit, not only a magnificent view awaits you, but also the old, abandoned sanatorium, which exudes a mysterious atmosphere. It is worth stopping for a moment and taking in the peace and quiet before you start the descent. This section is located in the protected natural park Δρυμός Πάρνηθας – so please pay attention to the applicable regulations and respect nature.

Real green forest, not far from Athens and thankfully spared from forest fires!

Attica offers a wide selection of mountain biking opportunities, with over 120 routes available. These range from easier paths to challenging climbs, catering to various skill levels.
Attica's mountain biking terrain is highly diverse. You'll find challenging mountainous landscapes on peaks like Mount Parnitha and Mount Hymettus, often featuring dense forests and significant elevation changes. There are also scenic coastal routes offering gentler rides with stunning views of the Aegean Sea. Expect a mix of gravel roads, singletrack, and varied surfaces.
The trails in Attica cater to a range of abilities. Approximately 10 routes are considered easy, while the majority, around 89, are moderate. For experienced riders seeking a challenge, there are about 29 difficult trails, often involving substantial climbs and technical sections.
While many trails in Attica involve significant elevation, there are easier options suitable for families or beginners. Look for routes designated as 'easy' in the komoot guide, which typically feature less challenging terrain and shorter distances. These are often found in less steep areas or along coastal paths.
Yes, many mountain bike trails in Attica offer breathtaking viewpoints. Routes on Mount Parnitha, for instance, provide panoramic views of Athens and the surrounding landscape. The Parnitha National Park – Balkoni Viewpoint loop from Άγιος Στέφανος is a great example, leading to a notable viewpoint.
Beyond the natural beauty, you can encounter various points of interest. On Mount Hymettus, you might pass by the Mount Hymettus itself, a significant natural monument. Other trails might lead you near historical sites like the Stoa of Attalos — Greek Agora Museum 🏛️ or natural features such as Kaisariani Monastery Spring and Vouliagméni Lake 🏊. The region also features several castles and towers, like the Chora Castle.
Yes, many of the mountain bike trails in Attica are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish at the same point. For example, the Tower of Anthousa – Imittos Mountain Bike Trail loop from Δουκίσσης Πλακεντίας is a popular moderate circular route on Mount Hymettus.
The best time for mountain biking in Attica is typically during the spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) months. During these periods, the weather is milder and more pleasant, avoiding the intense heat of summer and the cooler, potentially wetter conditions of winter. This allows for comfortable riding and better trail conditions.
Absolutely. Mountains like Parnitha and Hymettus, both easily accessible from Athens, offer numerous advanced routes. These trails often feature significant elevation gains and technical sections, providing a challenging experience for skilled riders. An example is the Imittos Mountain Bike Trail – Tower of Anthousa loop from Ηλιούπολη, which is a difficult 45 km route with over 1100m of ascent.
While many natural areas in Attica are generally welcoming, it's always best to check specific park regulations, especially within protected areas like Parnitha National Park, regarding dogs. On less restricted trails, dogs are often permitted, but always ensure they are well-behaved, on a leash where required, and that you clean up after them.
Yes, many popular trailheads, especially around Mount Parnitha and Mount Hymettus, offer designated parking areas. However, during peak times, these can fill up quickly. It's advisable to arrive early or research specific parking options for your chosen route in advance.
Some trailheads, particularly those closer to Athens on Mount Hymettus, can be accessed via public transport, such as bus routes or metro stations that connect to the foothills. For trails further afield, especially on Mount Parnitha, public transport options might be more limited, and a car is often more convenient for reaching starting points.
The mountain biking community highly rates Attica, with an average score of 4.6 stars from over 80 reviews.
