The Rollright Stones is a complex of three prehistoric megalithic monuments located in Little Rollright, near Chipping Norton, on the Oxfordshire and Warwickshire border. The site consists of the King’s Men stone circle, the King Stone, and the Whispering Knights dolmen, spanning nearly 2,000 years of Neolithic and Bronze Age development.
The complex is situated on an elevated, dark sky site with minimal light pollution, making it a recognized location for stargazing. The King’s Men is a ceremonial stone circle of approximately 70 stones, built between 2500-2000 BC. The Whispering Knights is a burial chamber, while the King Stone is a solitary standing stone.
According to local folklore, a witch turned a king, his army, and his five knights to stone after the king failed to see Long Compton from his seventh stride. The stones are naturally pitted, giving them distinctive shapes, and are built from boulders found within 500 meters of the site.
