Yes, the Loch an Eilein Circular is considered an easy walk, making it ideal for beginners, families, and those with all-terrain pushchairs or motorized wheelchairs. The path is generally flat with minimal elevation gain, requiring minimal fitness.
The trail primarily consists of well-maintained paths of packed dirt and gravel. While largely flat, some sections may feature exposed roots. Be aware that parts of the trail can become muddy after recent rainfall. The optional extension around Loch Gamhna is less maintained and can be particularly muddy.
Parking is available at the dedicated car park for Loch an Eilein, located within the Rothiemurchus Forest. There is typically a small fee for parking, which helps maintain the area. The trailhead is easily accessible from the car park.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the Loch an Eilein Circular. However, as it's within the Cairngorms National Park and a popular wildlife area, it's important to keep dogs under close control, preferably on a leash, to protect wildlife and livestock.
You do not need a permit to hike the Loch an Eilein Circular trail itself, nor is there an entrance fee for Cairngorms National Park. However, there is usually a small parking fee at the Loch an Eilein car park, which contributes to the upkeep of the area.
The highlight of the route is undoubtedly the ruined 13th-century Loch an Eilein Castle, situated on an island in the loch. You'll also enjoy the ancient Caledonian pine forest, the tranquil waters of Loch an Eilein, and the option to visit the quieter Loch Gamhna. The Loch An Eilein Circular Path itself is a beautiful experience.
The area is a haven for wildlife. Keep an eye out for red squirrels, crested tits, and Scottish crossbills. If you're lucky, you might even spot ospreys fishing in the loch. The ancient forest provides a rich habitat for various species.
The Loch an Eilein Circular is beautiful year-round. Spring and autumn offer vibrant colors and fewer midges. Summer is popular but can be busy. In winter, the snow-dusted landscape is stunning, but be prepared for colder temperatures and potentially icy or very muddy sections.
Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. While hiking the Loch an Eilein Circular, you'll also traverse sections of the Drakes Circuit, East Highland Way, Cairngorms Loop, Scotland Trail, and the Rothiemurchus Forest & Loch an Eilein trail.
Absolutely! For a quieter experience, you can extend your walk to include the smaller and more secluded Loch Gamhna. Another option for broader panoramic views is to ascend Ord Ban, which offers a different perspective of the surrounding landscape.
While there are no cafes directly on the trail, there is often a small visitor center or shop near the car park that may offer refreshments and facilities. The nearby town of Aviemore, just a short drive away, provides a wide range of cafes, restaurants, and other amenities.
Very nice tour around the lake, the detour around the smaller neighboring lake Loch Gamhna is worthwhile, even if the path was very swampy in places.
Loch an Eilan and Loch Gamhna walk through the beautiful Rothiemurchus Forest. This is a relatively easy walk, it's £1.50 to park per person (I think he thought I was hiding someone in the back of the van to save £1.50 🤣) reasonable price and I think you can pay to stay overnight in their car park. Such a lovely walk sadly I didn't see any deer or red squirrels but I did get some amazing views of the loch and forest as the sun was setting. There is also a castle on an island in the loch., Would definitely recommend this walk!
Trek around Lochs an Eilein & Gamhna in the Rothiemurchus forest estate. Very pretty despite the grey weather and very quiet too. The path is easy to follow and is broad and largely follows the loch shore line. To circle Loch Gamhna take the unmaintained path signed - its a bit muddy in places but easily navigable. The path it joins brings you round full circle passing the remains of the castle on an island in the loch. Lovely walk. Great overnight stopover location & suitable for wild swimming.
It is not for nothing that Loch Eilean with its island and castle ruins is THE postcard motif of the Cairngorm National Park. The landscape and the forest path itself are breathtakingly beautiful! Because the place is so popular, it is best to come early in the morning. The car park is always accessible. But what I liked best were the narrow paths around the small Loch Gamhna - so don't miss this section!
