Mountain biking

Embark on a difficult mountain bike ride through the Peak District National Park, covering 30.7 miles (49.4 km) with a significant 3441 feet (1049 metres) of elevation gain. This challenging loop, which typically takes around 4 hours and 13 minutes, offers extensive views across dramatic gritstone edges, expansive reservoirs like Ladybower, and the picturesque Hope Valley. You will encounter varied terrain, from loose and rocky tracks to technical sections, including the steep and rooty Devil's Elbow Descent.

This hard mountain bike ride demands very good fitness and advanced riding skills, so plan your day accordingly. Be prepared for sections where you might need to push your bike, especially on some of the more technical ascents. Given the length and difficulty, ensure you carry enough water, food, and repair supplies, and check weather conditions before you set out.

The route is notable for its diverse riding experience, including the purpose-built, smooth blue-graded trails at Lady Canning's Plantation, like "Blue Steel" and "Cooking on Gas." You will also ride along Houndkirk Road, an ancient, wide byway across Burbage Moor, which offers fast sections over sandy surfaces with some loose rocks. This loop is recognized as one of the most popular mountain bike trails around Bamford.

View of Sheffield from Harrop Lane

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The Whitely Woods trail and the Porter Clough connect Sheffield to the Peaks without the need to tackle roads and traffic, so this is very often the start and finish of a ride.

The Porter Clough climb is a fairly rude start, but a fantastic bonus on the way home.

And of course, if you stop and look you'll find a great view of Sheffield. This will be many a Sheffielders first proper ascent in the Peaks.

Devil's Elbow Descent

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This is a super fun, steepish, rocky, rooty, techy, spicy in places, thrutchy (and indeed occasionally nadgery) descent through Blacka moor.

Horrible as a climb, mind you – but if you're pointing in the right direction, drop your saddle, hunker down and prepare to have some fun!

Great moorland road, ideal for riders of any ability as it is wide and generally flat (given its location). However, if you are more experienced there are some excellent sections that are a blast flat-out. It links up well with Longshaw to the east, and south onto White Edge and further onto Froggatt and Curbar Edge. It can also be a great way to head north towards Lady Cannings Plantation and down (using Jumble Road) to Blackamoor.

Lady Canning Trails Start

Highlight • MTB Park

Both trails here are really good runs. One is a bit longer than the other but both are a total hoot, with more than a few jumps and berm along the way. Both the trails are good for all levels from beginner to expert depending in the speed you hit them at - if you are new to the course just take your time and enjoy!
