The trail is easily accessible from Morefield Campground, which is the only campground in Mesa Verde National Park. You can park directly at the trailhead located within the campground area.
The Prater Ridge South Loop Trail is approximately 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) long. Based on an average hiking pace, it typically takes around 2 hours and 5 minutes to complete the loop.
While the overall Prater Ridge Trail system is rated as strenuous, the South Loop itself is considered a moderate hike. The initial ascent involves a 500-foot gain over about a mile to reach the ridge. Once on the ridge, the South Loop features minor elevation changes, making it less strenuous than the full Prater Ridge Trail.
The trail begins with a steadily ascending path, including switchbacks, to reach the top of Prater Ridge. Once on the ridge, the path is generally well-maintained, though some sections can be rocky and narrow. The ground is mainly sandstone, which helps prevent muddiness even after rain.
The South Loop offers picturesque views into Prater Canyon, commanding vistas of the Montezuma Valley, and distant views of the San Juan Mountains. You can also see the white cliffs of Mesa Verde to the west with Ute Mountain in the background, and Morefield Campground below. The open ridge provides continuous panoramic scenery.
Deer are commonly sighted, especially around Morefield Campground during dusk and dawn. Black bears and turkeys are also occasionally spotted in the area.
Mesa Verde National Park generally has restrictions on pets on trails. It's best to check the official National Park Service website for the most current pet regulations before your visit.
The trail offers great views year-round, but spring and fall generally provide more comfortable temperatures for hiking. During warmer months, be prepared for significant sun exposure as the trail is largely unshaded. Winter hiking is possible but requires checking for snow and ice conditions.
The Prater Ridge South Loop Trail is located within Mesa Verde National Park. Therefore, standard park entrance fees apply. You do not need a separate permit specifically for hiking this trail once you have entered the park. Check the National Park Service website for current fee information.
Yes, the trail itself is considered a highlight, particularly the Prater Ridge Trail and specifically the Prater Ridge Trail south loop. The entire ridge offers numerous scenic overlooks with continuous panoramic vistas of the surrounding canyons and distant mountains.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Prater Ridge Trail and the Prater Ridge North Loop Trail. You have the flexibility to combine the South Loop with the North Loop for a longer hiking experience.
