Belle Tout Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

The Belle Tout lighthouse was the original one at Beachy Head. It was built in 1832 and operated until the end of the century. The light was becoming ineffective due to it not being seen properly because of cliff erosion. The new Beachy Head lighthouse at the foot of the cliffs was therefore built in 1902.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difficulty level and terrain like for this hike?

This loop is considered difficult, requiring very good fitness. The terrain features undulating cliff-top paths, chalk tracks, and uneven sections with slopes and steps. You'll encounter a mix of natural, unpaved paths, as well as some paved roads and concrete tracks.

What are the main highlights and landmarks along the route?

The trail offers spectacular sea views and passes several iconic landmarks. You'll see the impressive Seven Sisters cliffs, the distinctive Beachy Head Lighthouse at the base of the cliffs, and the historic Belle Tout Lighthouse. Other notable spots include Birling Gap, a National Trust site with beach access, and various viewpoints like View of Beachy Head Lighthouse and Seven Sisters Cliffs.

Is this trail suitable for beginners or families with young children?

Given its 'difficult' classification, significant distance (~20 km), and undulating terrain, this full loop is generally not recommended for beginners or families with young children. Shorter, easier walks are available around Birling Gap if you're looking for a less strenuous option.

Where can I park, and how do I access the trailhead?

The loop starts from Eastbourne. Parking is available in Eastbourne, with various car parks throughout the town. For specific trailhead access, you can begin near the Eastbourne Promenade and Pier, which is a convenient starting point for this loop.

Are dogs allowed on the trail, and what are the rules?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on this trail. However, as portions of the route are within the South Downs National Park and pass through areas with livestock and sensitive wildlife, it's crucial to keep dogs on a lead, especially near cliff edges and grazing animals. Always clean up after your dog.

What is the best time of year to hike this loop?

The best time to hike this loop is typically during the spring, summer, and early autumn months (April to October). During these periods, you'll experience milder weather, longer daylight hours, and the chalk grassland is often rich with wildflowers and butterflies. Be aware that coastal weather can change rapidly, so always check the forecast.

Do I need any permits or pay entrance fees for this trail or the South Downs National Park?

No, you do not need specific permits or to pay entrance fees to hike this trail or to access the South Downs National Park. However, some car parks, particularly at popular spots like Birling Gap, may charge a fee. You can find more information about the park at southdowns.gov.uk.

Does this trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, portions of this loop are part of the long-distance South Downs Way. The route also passes through sections of the King Charles III England Coast Path: Shoreham to Eastbourne and the Wealdway.

Are there places to get food or drinks along the way?

Yes, Birling Gap, a National Trust site, has a visitor center and a cafe. There are also pubs and cafes in Eastbourne at the start/end of the trail, and potentially near Beachy Head, offering opportunities for refreshments.

What safety precautions should I take, especially regarding the cliffs?

The area is known for coastal erosion, so it's crucial to stay vigilant and heed warning signs about unstable cliff edges. Always keep a safe distance from the cliff tops and bases. Wear appropriate hiking footwear, carry enough water, and be prepared for changing weather conditions.

Is there public transport available to reach the starting point or other parts of the trail?

Eastbourne is well-served by public transport, including train and bus services, making it easy to reach the starting point of the loop. Local bus services also connect Eastbourne with Birling Gap and Beachy Head, offering options for shorter walks or if you need to cut your hike short.
