The full route from Pescara to Vasto is approximately 113 km long. While the tour data suggests a duration of around 7 hours for continuous cycling, many people choose to break it into multiple days to fully enjoy the scenery, explore towns, and visit attractions like the trabocchi. If you're planning to cycle the entire stretch, consider an overnight stay.
The overall route is classified as 'difficult' due to its length and some hillier sections, especially as you approach Vasto. However, a significant portion, the Via Verde dei Trabocchi, is built on a disused railway line. This section, running for about 42-54 km from Ortona to San Salvo (just south of Vasto), is predominantly flat, well-paved, and very accessible for all skill levels, including families and e-bike users. You can choose to cycle just this easier part.
The terrain is varied. A large part of the route, particularly the Via Verde dei Trabocchi, is flat and well-paved, following the old railway line. However, as you get closer to Vasto, especially around areas like Punta Aderci, you might encounter hillier sections and mixed surfaces, including gravel tracks. There are also some short segments where you'll need to ride on busier roads like the SS16.
You'll encounter a diverse range of sights. Starting in Pescara, you'll cross the impressive Ponte del Mare. Further along, you'll enjoy the beautiful Francavilla al Mare Beach and the stunning natural beauty of the Punta dell'Acquabella Nature Reserve and its adjacent Punta dell'Acquabella Beach. The iconic trabocchi, traditional fishing structures, are a constant feature, many of which are now seafood restaurants. The Via Verde dei Trabocchi itself is a highlight, offering breathtaking sea views and repurposed tunnels and bridges. Don't miss the Panoramic View from Punta Aderci, where you might even spot the Maiella mountains inland.
The best time to cycle this route is typically during the spring (April-May) and early autumn (September-October). During these months, the weather is generally pleasant, with comfortable temperatures for cycling, and you avoid the intense heat and larger crowds of the peak summer season. The scenery is also particularly vibrant in spring.
Yes, a significant portion of this route, about 89%, is part of the larger Ciclovia Adriatica. It also incorporates the highly acclaimed Via Verde della Costa dei Trabocchi. Additionally, you'll find it intersects with sections of other local trails like Il Cammino d'Abruzzo and Percorso Ciclabile della Riserva Naturale Regionale di Punta Aderci.
Parking is available in both Pescara and Vasto, as well as in many of the smaller towns along the coast. For the Via Verde dei Trabocchi section, you can find parking areas in towns like Ortona, San Vito Chietino, Fossacesia, and San Salvo. It's advisable to check local parking regulations and availability, especially during peak season.
Generally, dogs are allowed on the cycling paths, especially on the Via Verde dei Trabocchi, provided they are kept on a leash. However, specific rules may apply to nature reserves like Punta Aderci. Always ensure your dog is well-behaved and that you clean up after them. Some beaches or establishments might have restrictions, so it's best to check locally if you plan to stop.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to cycle the Seafront from Pescara to Vasto route, including the Via Verde dei Trabocchi. Access to the cycling path is free. However, if you visit specific attractions, museums, or enter certain protected areas with facilities, there might be associated costs.
Absolutely! The route passes through numerous seaside towns and villages, offering plenty of opportunities for refreshments, meals, and accommodation. Many of the traditional trabocchi have been converted into unique seafood restaurants right on the water. You'll find cafes, restaurants, hotels, and B&Bs in towns like Francavilla al Mare, Ortona, San Vito Chietino, Fossacesia, and Vasto.
Yes, bike rental services are available in Pescara and Vasto, as well as in some of the larger towns along the Via Verde dei Trabocchi. It's recommended to book in advance, especially during busy periods, to ensure availability of your preferred bike type (e.g., touring bike, e-bike).
Leaving Pescara isn't much...the real Via dei Trabocchi starts in Ortona and if you can see an entrance first on the main road it's even better, I dribbled it...the first bit is very crowded then by hand fewer people hand. It is very beautiful and the Trabocchi are very interesting. Overall a nice ride that I've wanted to do for a while.
Interesting and beautiful ride, despite the headwind
Beautiful route almost entirely in protected cycle path the peak area adheres attention in case of rain it is muddy we pushed the bikes by hand in some points but they traveled with luggage ... I advise against following my trail to cross the river sinello the bridge it is excellent but the path we followed is steep, narrow, full of brambles and muddy, while the track along the river was better so either you will arrive on the state road or I suggest you find a better access.
