Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I park for the Snowdon via Pyg and Miners' Track Loop?

The trail starts and ends at Pen-y-Pass. Parking here is very limited and often requires pre-booking, especially during peak season. It's highly recommended to use public transport, such as the Sherpa bus service, which connects Pen-y-Pass with nearby towns like Llanberis and Nant Peris, where larger car parks are available.

Is this route suitable for dogs?

While dogs are generally welcome in Eryri / Snowdonia National Park, this particular route can be challenging for them. The Pyg Track involves rocky, uneven ground and boulder fields, which can be tough on paws. The Miners' Track also has steep, rocky sections. Always keep dogs on a lead to protect livestock and wildlife, and ensure they are fit enough for a strenuous mountain hike.

What is the best time of year to hike this loop?

The best time to hike this route is typically from late spring (May) to early autumn (October). During these months, you'll generally find more stable weather conditions, longer daylight hours, and less chance of snow or ice on the upper sections. Winter hiking requires significant experience, specialist equipment, and an understanding of severe mountain conditions.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required to hike in Eryri / Snowdonia National Park?

No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to access the trails within Eryri / Snowdonia National Park, including the Pyg and Miners' Tracks. However, parking at popular trailheads like Pen-y-Pass often incurs a charge, and pre-booking is usually essential.

What is the terrain like on the Pyg and Miners' Tracks?

The terrain is diverse and rugged. The Pyg Track starts with a steep climb over rocky, uneven ground and through a boulder field, requiring some scrambling. The Miners' Track, while generally gentler in its lower sections, still features steep, rocky descents and indistinct paths over large boulders in its upper parts, especially near Glaslyn.

What can I see along the route?

This loop offers spectacular mountain vistas and historical features. You'll pass stunning mountain lakes like Glaslyn (associated with King Arthur) and Llyn Llydaw, which you cross via a historic stone causeway. The route also provides incredible views of the Snowdon Horseshoe, including Crib Goch, and leads to the Snowdon Summit (Yr Wyddfa).

How long does it typically take to complete this loop?

The Snowdon via Pyg and Miners' Track Loop typically takes between 5 to 7 hours to complete, depending on your fitness level, pace, and how much time you spend at the summit or enjoying the views. It covers approximately 12.3 km (7.6 miles) with a significant elevation gain.

Does this trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route primarily follows sections of the Pyg Track and the Miners' Track. Near the summit, it briefly joins the Cambrian Way and the Welsh Three Thousands route. You'll also see the challenging Crib Goch ridge running parallel to parts of the Pyg Track, though hikers are directed to stay on the main path unless attempting the advanced scramble.

Is the Pyg Track or Miners' Track more difficult for the ascent?

The Pyg Track is generally considered more challenging for the ascent due to its immediate steep, rocky climb and boulder fields. Many hikers prefer to ascend via the Pyg Track for the direct challenge and descend via the Miners' Track, which offers a more gradual descent in its lower sections.

What should I pack for this hike?

Given the mountain environment, pack layers of clothing suitable for all weather conditions, as the weather can change rapidly. Essential items include waterproof and windproof outer layers, sturdy hiking boots, a map and compass (or GPS device), sufficient water and snacks, a first-aid kit, and sun protection. Even in summer, warm layers are advisable for the summit.

Are there any facilities or amenities at Pen-y-Pass?

Yes, Pen-y-Pass is home to a youth hostel which often has a small shop and café, providing refreshments and basic facilities. Public toilets are also usually available. However, it's always best to check opening times, especially outside of peak season.

After I started walking at 06:00 only a few people came towards me !! (Tradition here : sunrise from Snowdon) After that I was mostly alone up to the summit - fortunately not quite, because on the last 2 kilometers it felt like a hurricane. I'm on all fours to the summit monument to avoid being blown away :-)

Kommot Data are wrong, real time was 4:40 and 849m heightdiff, and for gods sake, wear proper boots and proper clothes !

I'm now visible again on Komoot. I had to go private for a couple of months!

Magnificent hike today, started in the clouds, then the weather cleared and the light was fantastic. The snow on the heights added a lot of charm (and I was very happy to have taken my micro-crampons), a magnificent rainbow closed this magnificent hike towards the 2 highest peaks. Lots of people on Snowdon, but by going to the summit next door, only 20m lower, the solitude and the magical view of steep and snowy Snowdon, with the lakes below. The view is much better!

Half way up the 2nd bit of our scramble (level 1) up the Crib Goch, i kept slipping off the rocks. My right hand doesnt have much grip due to my MS. I didnt feel confident enough and was going too slowly up the Crib in any case. This is absolutely not an easy route, especially when its wet rocks and poor visibility. My boots had no grip. Better to be in uktra running shoes! Be prepared for a serious workout on the Crib. Kaitlin, my YHA roommate who came with me went further ahead and managed to do the ridge of Crib Doch. Meanwhike I went down to the Pyg Trail and walked up to the summit. Waited for Kaitlin for 40 mins before it got too cold. Then started heading back down the Pyg Trail and we found each other. We then walked down the Miners Trail and arrived at 8.10pm at the youth host at Pen Y Pass. Famished and utterly tired, we ate and drank well and celebrated with our other roommates at the hostel. A great day and was very glad i didn't carry on with the Crib Goch. I love a ridge but im not 20 anymore! 🤣 what a great mountain Snowdon is. Even better out of season. Dont bother coming here in the summer, if you can avoid it! Theres usually a queue otherwise for tge summit. The hostel is the closest lodging to the trails mentioned above.

Please ignore the speed/time/ascent data - Komoot doesn’t import that data correctly from the Suunto GPX file.

The Pen-y-Pass car park must be booked in advance, so we drove 5 km further to the Park & Ride Nant Peris (£5 24h until 11:59pm) and took the "Sherpa Shuttle" back to Pen-y-Pass (£3 return). The hike can be completed in around 5 hours, even with short photo breaks. However, the 720 metres of elevation should not be underestimated, especially on the challenging rocky paths. The fantastic view along the entire route makes up for it completely. You should have sensible footwear and surefootedness. We met a "hiker" wearing flip-flops! The tour is also suitable for children, we met a few families. The summit of Snowden can get crowded, however, as the cog railway ensures enough tourists.

Pyg up and miners down, this was the 3rd mountain we hiked in the 3 peak challenge. Wet and windy but fun, loved it!
