Highlight • Rest Area

Afan Forest is very well known for its mountain biking and well, there is a lot of it! There are trails for all abilities, but the main focus here is the red graded trails, which are great and really well maintained, very gravely but can be ridden in all weather.

There are a lot of elevation changes so some good fitness here will be required. As well as the trails there are a number of fire roads, bridleways and a bike path so great for some gravel riding too.

Afan Forest Park Visitor Centre is one of two parking and start areas for the trails. From here you can ride The Rookie, Blue Scar, Penhydd and Y Wal and W2 mountain bike trails.

There is also a cafe, bike shop and bike hire, toilets and showers. Parking is paid.

A brilliantly crafted long section of boardwalk on the White's Level loop, a trail with a red rating. It can get pretty narrow in places and flanked by bog, so don't fall off!

For the second half, you can either take the twisting boardwalk or stick to solid ground, the choice is yours.

The final part of the White's Level loop from Glynvcorrwg, Darkside twists through the trees before a brilliant rocky descent that hugs the hillside to give you a long run down to the valley bottom.

Brilliant trail centre at Glyncorrwg Ponds further up the valley than the other Afan trail centre.

There's a fantastic cafe on the first floor (you can take your bike up the steps onto the terrace), as well as bike shop and washing facilities. Also some handy trail maps here and pretty reasonable parking fares.

Highlight (Segment) • MTB Park

The initial climb on the trail centre is a rude awakening for the legs, but there are great views down the valley to distract you from the effort.

Is the W2 Black loop suitable for beginners?

How long does it typically take to complete the W2 Black loop?

This is a long and demanding route. Most riders can expect to spend between 4 to 7 hours to complete it, depending on their fitness level, riding pace, and how many stops they make. It's a substantial ride, so plan your day accordingly.

What is the terrain like on this trail?

The terrain is diverse and challenging, featuring a mix of rocky sections, steep climbs and descents, and varied singletrack. You'll encounter fast-flowing sections, tight technical lines, boardwalks, and small rock drops, often with ride-around options. Some parts are described as 'gnarly' and can be slippery after rain. It also incorporates some fire roads and bridleways connecting different sections.

What can I see along the route?

The trail offers epic panoramic views of the Afan Valley and surrounding woodlands. Notable features you'll encounter include the Energy Boardwalk, White's Level, and sections of the challenging Darkside (White's Level) Trail. March 17, 2022, Half Whites, Half Y Wall. Afan

Starting at Afan Lodge allows time to warm the legs and heart before the legendary’Whites’ Climb. After Whites, a small blast down ‘Windy Point’ and then across to ‘Y Wall’ where a small climb gives access to ‘Graveyard’ and then ‘Zig Zags’. After that it’s back to the Lodge for tea and cake 🥰
