The ascent to Pico Veleta is one of those road cycling routes that will leave you breathless, not just from the effort but also from the incredible views it offers. As you pedal, the landscape changes dramatically, transitioning from forested areas to a rocky, desolate terrain that resembles a lunar landscape. From the heights, the city of Granada looks tiny, and on clear days, you can even spot the Mediterranean Sea – an experience that makes you feel on top of the world.
This route presents a considerable challenge, covering a distance of 88.6 kilometers with an elevation gain of 2700 meters, which will take approximately 5 hours and 49 minutes. It is a difficult route, suitable only for cyclists with excellent physical and mental preparation. The road becomes very uneven and gravelly in the final kilometers, especially after Hoya de la Mora, making it crucial to plan your visit between June and mid-September when snow does not block the pass.
Pico Veleta is famous for being the highest paved road in Europe, reaching an altitude of 3398 meters, which truly makes it the "Everest of European mountain passes." Conquering this summit is a significant achievement for any cyclist, and the experience of pedaling the final kilometers without motorized traffic, from Hoya de la Mora, adds a special touch to this unique adventure in Sierra Nevada.
