Hiking

Embark on the Padstow to Trevone loop, a moderate hike spanning 7.5 miles (12.1 km) with an elevation gain of 486 feet (148 metres), typically taking 3 hours and 15 minutes to complete. This route treats you to panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the tranquil Camel Estuary. As you hike, you'll navigate varied terrain, from dedicated paths to rugged sections beyond Gun Point, passing golden sandy beaches like Trevone Bay and Hawker's Cove. The path undulates with ascents and descents along cliff tops, offering a true taste of Cornwall's dramatic coastline.

Starting from the charming fishing town of Padstow, this loop requires good fitness due to its moderate difficulty and varied ground underfoot. You should wear sturdy footwear to handle the diverse surfaces, which include footpaths, some road stretches, and sandy dunes. Trevone Bay, a key point on the route, offers convenient facilities such as toilets, a cafe, and a shop, making it a good spot for a break. Be prepared for uneven sections, especially beyond Gun Point, to fully enjoy the experience.

This quintessential Cornish coastal walk beautifully combines natural grandeur with historical and geological points of interest. You will encounter the prominent Stepper Point Daymark, a historical navigational beacon offering expansive views. The route also passes the impressive Trevone Roundhole, a natural collapsed sea-cave, and provides views of the infamous Doom Bar sand bank at the mouth of the Camel Estuary. The dramatic coastline features towering cliffs, unique rock formations, and an abundance of coastal wildlife and wildflowers.

Padstow Harbour

Highlight • Beach

Padstow is a charming fishing town and harbour that is rich in history and heritage. Whilst it can get busy, it is for good reason as the picturesque town has lots to see and experience. There are many attractive beaches and coves close to Padstow, too, including Bedruthan Steps, said to be the stepping stones of an ancient giant, and Constantine Bay, one of the best surfing beaches in the area.

A glorious section of the Cost Path lies here at the Camel Estuary. From Padstow towards the sea you have great views - of Padstow and the harbor to Pentire Point. The path leads along the coast, over a dune landscape and up to Stepper Point.

St George's Cove

Highlight • Viewpoint

Just a half mile walk from Padstow will bring you to St George's Cove. At high tide there is just a small area of sand, it is low tide when the cove really gets to show off its best side. The golden sands are so vast you can walk all the way to Hawker's Cove and Harbour Cove.

Facing out into the Camel Estuary, it is lovely and sheltered but sadly it isn't a swimming beach, as tempting as it looks. The currents in the estuary are very strong and very dangerous. Enjoy the views over to Rock and Daymer Bay instead.

Harbour Cove and Hawker's Cove

Highlight • Viewpoint

The two coves sit side by side on the edge of the Camel Estuary. At low tide the beaches are joined together but when the tide come in, they are quite seperate.

Harbour Cove, in the south is a wide expanse of sand and sand dunes. You can walk past Hawker's Cove and up to Gunn Point at low tide. The sand bank here is infamous for shipwrecking. Known as the Doom Bar, 600 ships have hit it since 1800.

Hawker's Cove, closer to the estuary mouth, is much smaller with rocky banks on either side. A picturesque row of Coastguard cottages flank the beach making it a much photographed location.

Stepper Point Daymark Tower

Highlight • Natural Monument

From the rugged headland of Stepper Point, you experience wonderful views over the Cornish coastline. The headland is topped by a stone tower, built as a 'day mark' to serve as a navigation beacon for seafarers during daylight.

Trevone Roundhole

Highlight • Natural Monument

The 80ft wide Trevone Roundhole was once a sea cave, its ceiling worn away by the sea pounding in and out which eventually collapsed.

It's an impressive natural sight but please enjoy it from a distance as there have been tragedies in the past where people have fallen in. The rock and earth around the hole are incredibly unstable so please don't try to climb down into it.

Trevone Bay

Highlight • Natural

Popular with surfers and families alike, Trevone Bay has good swell yet a gently sloping beach plus plenty of rocks and caves for children to explore.

There are toilets, a cafe and a shop at the beach and just a short step inland Trevone has plenty more facilities to offer. It is a good place to park and walk round the coastline to Padstow.

More suspicously high October temps...
A stroll from Padstow along the coastal path, culminating with fish n chips before the ferry back over to Rock. 🐟
This was the walk I learnt what sugar beet is 🧐
The loop starts and ends at the Harlyn Bay car park and follows primarily the Coast Path. First you run towards Trevone and the Round Hole (opposite). Before you reach the place, the route turns in that direction and runs across or along various fields (in our case it was tall corn fields and beets).
Then you come to lively …

The starting point is the extremely crowded fishing village of Padstow. Crowds of people roam the streets here. After reaching the beach about a kilometer outside, the hike becomes quieter, almost lonely. A personal highlight: we came into the bay just before the tide set in and were able to walk across the beach, which was several hundred meters wide, …

First day of our Cornwall holiday. And it was a real hit. The best time of year: everything is green and blooming... simply magical here. And the cliffs are stunning!
