The Hall Walk is approximately 7.76 km (4.8 miles) long and typically takes around 2 hours and 9 minutes to complete. This duration includes time for the two ferry crossings.
The trail is generally considered moderate, featuring uneven footpaths, some short, steep climbs, and rocky sections. It can be a little uneven and steep in places. During wet periods, the path can become 'slodgy and slippery underfoot,' so substantial footwear like walking boots is advisable.
No specific permits are required to hike the Hall Walk. As it lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), visitors are encouraged to follow the Countryside Code: stick to marked paths, take all litter home, keep dogs under control, and respect wildlife and local communities. There are no entrance fees for the trail itself.
While generally manageable, the trail's moderate difficulty, uneven terrain, and short steep sections might be challenging for very young children or those with mobility issues. For beginners, it's a good introduction to coastal hiking, but be prepared for some ascents and descents. Benches are regularly spaced for rests.
You can typically park in Fowey, which is well-connected to the start of the walk via the Polruan Ferry or the Bodinnick Ferry. Parking is also available in Polruan or Bodinnick, allowing you to start the circular route from any of these points.
The Hall Walk offers stunning views of Fowey Estuary and Harbour, the peaceful Pont Pill Tidal Creek, and the charming villages of Bodinnick and Polruan. You'll also pass sites of historical significance, including memorials and areas associated with authors Daphne du Maurier and Arthur Quiller-Couch.
Yes, the Hall Walk is dog-friendly. However, please keep your dog on a lead, especially near livestock, on ferry crossings, and in village areas, to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all users and local wildlife.
The Hall Walk is enjoyable year-round, but spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful scenery, with wildflowers in spring. Summer can be busy, while winter can make paths 'slodgy and slippery.' Always check ferry timetables, as services may be reduced in off-peak seasons.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Hall Walk, Fowey Hall Walk, Lantic Bay, and the South West Coast Path (Section 33: Par to Polperro), offering opportunities to explore further if you wish.
The Hall Walk is a circular route that relies on two ferry crossings: the Bodinnick Ferry and the Polruan Ferry. It's generally recommended to check their operating times in advance, especially outside of peak season, to ensure a smooth completion of the loop. Starting from Fowey, you can take either ferry first to begin the walk.
Yes, the villages of Fowey, Bodinnick, and Polruan, which are all connected by the Hall Walk, offer various amenities. You'll find pubs, cafes, and restaurants where you can refuel and enjoy local Cornish fare before or after your hike.
Very nice tour through the forest with great views and two nice ferry rides (£2.80 each way). With many short but steep climbs, the circulation gets going well despite the short tour. ;-) Parking: Car Park in Fowey (Passage Lane). But be careful: pay for the parking ticket only with coins! Be there early in the morning, otherwise it is full. Tip that I discovered myself as a reader's tip in the travel guide: eat at Sam's in Fowey at the end of the tour. Super nice people and good food in a rustic atmosphere.
