Mountain biking

Embark on the Windermere, Hawkshead and Kentmere loop, a demanding mountain biking adventure through the Lake District. This difficult 33.7-mile (54.3 km) route, typically taking around 4 hours and 53 minutes, challenges you with 4043 feet (1232 metres) of elevation gain across varied terrain. You will encounter unpaved tracks, rocky paths, and thrilling singletrack descents, including the fast doubletrack near the Grizedale Stone Fox Sculpture. The Claife Heights Trail offers particularly stunning vistas, showcasing the concentrated essence of the lakes with its immense beauty and picturesque tarns.

Planning your ride requires good fitness and advanced skills; be prepared for sections where you might need to push your bike, especially on the steep Kentmere side of Garburn Pass. The trail is highly rated, often feeling surprisingly quiet despite its proximity to popular spots like Ambleside. Consider incorporating a ferry crossing as a unique part of your journey, but always check schedules beforehand to avoid delays. The area is known for dry conditions, large rock slabs, and loose corners, so choose your timing wisely.

This loop is a quintessential Lake District journey, offering an extensive exploration of the region's natural splendor, shaped by glacial activity. It seamlessly integrates tranquil bridleways with demanding mountain passes, providing a varied riding experience. Beyond the trails, the wider area around Windermere and Hawkshead holds historical landmarks like Wray Castle and Beatrix Potter's Hill Top Farm, allowing you to blend cultural stops into your adventure. The route's popularity stems from its significant challenge and breathtaking views of mountains, moorlands, and forests.

Bridleway to Kentmere

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

A gentle, but very pleasant climb and a similar descent whichever way you tackle it.

On a good day, the views are, as you'd expect, spectacular, and it's surprisingly quiet despite its proximity to the Ambleside and Windermere walking honeypots.

Lunsty Howe doubletrack, Kentmere Hall

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A thrilling descent or testing climb, with stony doubletrack and Hall Wood to the side of the dry stone wall.

The views from here are just breathtaking, but you should probably be concentrating on where you're going!

Garburn Pass

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

Debate has long raged as to whether it's better to ride the Garburn Pass from Kentmere to Troutbeck or vice versa. The trail is much steeper on the Kentmere side; more gradual on the Troutbeck side. Once an extremely technical descent, surfacing work necessitated by the large amount of walking traffic rendered the Kentmere descent an exercise in wash-out braking, so many people prefer to ride/push up from Kentmere and enjoy the more languid descent down to Troutbeck.

Nice way to avoid the roads into Ambleside. Good for campers in Low Wray.

Grizedale Stone Fox Sculpture

Highlight (Segment) • Monument

Flat out fast descent, double track with natural drops and rock sections. Look out for motorbikes and 4x4’s as this is an open green lane.

Take care when you get to the bottom of the track as it goes straight onto a road.

Claife Heights Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This trail between Sawrey and Belle Grange/High Wray is an absolute delight. It's not remotely technical, but it's utterly stunning. There are no huge mountains to take the breath away (well, there are, but they're on the horizon) but it's as if someone wished to distil the concentrated essence of the lakes into a couple of square miles. There are tarns, gently undulating scenery immense beauty everywhere. It's well worth lingering.

Windermere Ferry Crossing

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

At the time of writing, the ferry (an otherwise wonderful way to start or end a trip) is out of action, likely until October 2018. Windermere Lake Cruises is offering a pedestrian service, and has stated it will "operate a special Bike friendly vessel between Bowness and Ferry House on days when availability allows" in the mean time from Wray Castle and Brock Hole. They advise calling ahead to check on 015394 43360. At present (August 2018) it's operating half-hourly from 10:15 until 16:30. windermere-lakecruises.co.uk/cruises-fares/bike-boat

A great ride to taste what riding in the lakes is all about. We started in Ings so it wasn't long before we were sampling the infamous Garbon Pass hike a bike. I don't think there is really a directional debate about the pass as the worst of it isn't really ridable anyway. Or not in anyway that would be …
