This route is generally rated as difficult. While some sections are relatively flat, you'll encounter challenging and steep climbs, particularly towards Little Ingleborough and the final push to the summit. The varied terrain includes rocky paths, steep ascents, and potentially slippery descents, making it a demanding hike best suited for experienced walkers.
The Ingleborough loop from Clapham is a substantial hike covering approximately 16.6 km (10.3 miles) with an elevation gain of about 559 meters. Most hikers complete the full loop in around 5 to 6 hours, though this can vary based on fitness levels, weather conditions, and time spent exploring points of interest.
The terrain is incredibly varied. You'll start on relatively flat dirt paths through woodlands, then progress to undulating and rocky sections, especially through the dramatic Trow Gill. The ascent to Ingleborough's summit involves a steep, rocky climb. The descent can be rough initially, but later includes flat grassy trails and impressive limestone pavements. Hiking poles are recommended for the steeper, potentially wet sections.
This route is packed with natural wonders and historical sites. You'll pass through charming woodlands, alongside Clapham Beck, and encounter striking geological formations like Ingleborough Cave, the dramatic Trow Gill gorge, and the famous Gaping Gill Waterfall and Cave Entrance. From the broad summit plateau of Ingleborough summit, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views across the Yorkshire Dales and beyond.
Clapham village offers parking options, typically paid car parks. It's advisable to arrive early, especially on weekends or during peak season, as parking can fill up quickly. The trailhead usually begins directly from the village, making it convenient to start your hike after parking.
Yes, the Ingleborough loop is generally dog-friendly. However, dogs should be kept on a lead, especially through farmland, near livestock, and in sensitive wildlife areas. Be prepared for stiles and rocky sections that might require assisting your dog. Always carry water for your dog, as natural sources can be unreliable.
No specific permits are required to hike the Ingleborough loop itself. As it's located within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, there are no entrance fees for the park. However, you may need to pay for parking in Clapham village. Please respect all National Park regulations, such as keeping dogs on leads and taking all litter home.
The best time to hike the Ingleborough loop is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During these months, you're more likely to experience milder weather, longer daylight hours, and clearer paths. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear, experience, and caution due to potentially harsh weather, ice, and snow on the exposed upper sections.
Yes, Clapham village, where the loop starts and ends, offers several amenities. You'll find cafes and pubs where you can grab refreshments or a meal before or after your hike. It's a great place to relax and refuel after conquering Ingleborough.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with several other notable paths. You'll find yourself on parts of the Dales High Way, A Pennine Journey, and the Great North Trail (Yorkshire Dales). It also briefly follows a portion of the famous Three Peaks Walk, which includes Ingleborough as one of its summits.
Due to its length, significant elevation gain, and challenging rocky terrain, the full Ingleborough loop from Clapham is generally not recommended for young children or inexperienced family hikers. Some initial sections through the Ingleborough Estate Nature Trail might be suitable for families, but the full summit ascent requires a good level of fitness and experience.
