The Clun loop is generally considered a moderate mountain bike ride, requiring good fitness. However, be prepared for some segments that can be challenging, including sharp uphill climbs where you might need to dismount and push your bike. The wider Shropshire Hills area offers a range of trails, from family-friendly to more technical routes.
You'll encounter a diverse range of terrain, typical of the Shropshire Hills. This includes rolling hills, steep valleys, and sections that may involve bridleways, byways, and forestry tracks. Some parts can be rocky or slippery, especially after rain.
The town of Clun serves as an excellent starting point for the loop. You can find parking facilities within Clun, which also offers amenities for riders before and after your ride.
The route winds through the Shropshire Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering spectacular views of lush countryside, rolling hills, and dramatic steep valleys. You'll also pass historical elements such as the ruins of Clun Castle, a significant Norman fortress, which are free to enter. Other highlights include the The White Horse Inn, Clun and the Lychgate of St. George's Church, Clun.
Yes, the town of Clun provides convenient amenities for mountain bikers. You can find places to refuel and relax, such as The White Horse Inn, Clun, which also offers bike storage and clothes washing facilities. There are also various accommodation options in and around Clun.
Spring, summer, and early autumn generally offer the most pleasant conditions for mountain biking the Clun loop, with drier trails and milder weather. While winter riding is possible, be prepared for potentially muddy, slippery, and colder conditions, especially on exposed sections.
Yes, the Clun loop is generally dog-friendly. However, as much of the route uses bridleways and byways through agricultural land, it's essential to keep dogs under close control, especially near livestock, and to follow the Countryside Code.
You do not typically need a specific permit for mountain biking on public bridleways and byways within the Shropshire Hills National Landscape, including the Clun loop. However, always stick to designated paths, respect private land, and follow the Countryside Code. For specific regulations on private estates or dedicated trail centers like Hopton Woods Mountain Bike Trails, it's best to check their individual websites.
Yes, the Clun loop intersects with and incorporates sections of other routes. Notably, about 30% of the route follows the Heart of Wales Line Trail. It also briefly touches parts of the Shropshire Way - stage 03 and Shropshire Way - stage 04, and includes segments of local trails like Mere Oak Run, Daves Start, Extension Loop, Seed Orchard Climb, and Trump Run.
Public transport options to Clun can be limited. It's advisable to check local bus services or train connections to nearby towns like Craven Arms, and then plan for a connecting bus or taxi to Clun. For detailed and up-to-date information, consult local transport websites like visitshropshire.co.uk or visitshropshirehills.co.uk.
August 2025. A lovley senic route with some good climbs. However, part of this route was blocked by fallen trees. I did manage to climb through but had to lift my bike over large tree trunks. Also, there's a very steep section that I had to push up, but looking at the map you can go round it.
