This route was planned by komoot.
The loop starts from the parking area of Lake Bouillouses. During summer months, private vehicle access to the Bouillouses area is restricted. You will need to use public buses that provide transport to the lake's parking area. Check local schedules for operating dates and times.
No, this trail is rated as difficult and is not suitable for beginners or young children. It requires good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and alpine experience. Sections can be challenging, with varied terrain and potential snow or ice.
The terrain is varied and consists mainly of unpaved surfaces, including hiking trails, mountain trails, and some alpine sections. You should be prepared for rocky paths and potentially uneven ground. Outside of peak summer, there can be sections with snow and ice, requiring additional caution.
The loop offers stunning natural beauty, passing by several picturesque mountain lakes. You'll encounter Lake Bouillouses, Lac du Raco, Estany Llarg, and Étang Noir. The area is also known for diverse flora like rhododendrons and blueberries, and you might even spot deer.
The best time to hike is typically during the summer and early autumn when the weather is most stable and snow has melted. However, even in these seasons, conditions can change rapidly at altitudes over 2,000 meters. Be aware that outside of peak summer, sections may still have snow and ice.
Dogs are generally allowed on trails within the Parc naturel régional des Pyrénées Catalanes, but they must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and livestock. Given the challenging nature of this specific trail, ensure your dog is fit enough for alpine conditions and varied terrain.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Estanys dels Esquits loop or to enter the Parc naturel régional des Pyrénées Catalanes. However, access to the Lake Bouillouses area itself may involve fees for the public shuttle bus during restricted periods in summer.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the HRP Étape 34, La traversée des Pyrénées - sec.2, El Camí IT1TR5 El Camí Capçaler: de Salzes a Balaguer, Tour du Capcir, Tour du Carlit, HRP Étape 33, HRP Variante 33.2, and Barrage du Lac des Bouillouses.
The Estanys dels Esquits loop itself is often less crowded than some of the more frequented routes directly around Lake Bouillouses. For a more serene experience, consider hiking early in the morning or later in the afternoon, especially during peak season, to avoid the busiest times for the shuttle and the main lake area.
Given the 'difficult' rating and alpine environment, you should bring sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, appropriate layers of clothing for varying weather conditions, rain gear, a map and compass or GPS device, sufficient water and snacks, sun protection, and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles can also be very helpful on the varied terrain.
Wonderfully easy hike, but it was 180 meters high and this hike is really not "difficult", only block-like stones have to be crossed over a distance of about 50 m, mountain boots are useful, no risk of falling or anything else
Today we went on a lovely circular walk, the broom was in full bloom everywhere. A wonderful sight, the whole mountain slopes in yellow.
