In Schermbeck, you'll embark on a 39-kilometer cycling tour that takes you into the world of forests, moors, and floodplains.

You'll cycle through the town for a while before heading out into nature. Nestled between two farming communities lies one of the most beautiful wooded areas North Rhine-Westphalia has to offer: the Üfter Mark. A landscape shaped by Ice Age glaciers, it features dunes, sandy soils, and small bogs. It's home to numerous rare species, heathland, and ancient oaks and pines. Kilometers of paths wind through this nature reserve. It's breathtakingly beautiful and a wonderful habitat for plants and animals, including an important habitat for red deer. These impressive wild animals can be observed from a viewing platform, especially during the rutting season.

The next natural stop: the Rhader Wiesen (Rhader Meadows). This 210-hectare wetland conservation area south of Rhade lies amidst agricultural and forestry land. A magical landscape of meadows and streams, perfect for observing the activities of the resident storks, including their young. Next, head to the Witte Berge and Deutener Moor nature reserve, which has been a protected area since 1931. Here you can admire cotton grass and juniper heath, as well as a variety of heathers. This area, with its shifting dunes and moorland, is captivating and worth visiting in every season.

Then continue to the Tüshaus Mill, where you might want to take a break. The Tüshaus Mill has been a listed technical monument since 1986. The historic mill complex is truly beautiful, and guided tours are offered (advance booking required!). The lake in front of the mill and the old trees are simply enchanting. Come and enjoy!

The next nature reserve awaits. Making nature accessible is the central theme of the Hervester Bruch. In the nature reserve surrounding the Wienbach stream, you'll find many special and rare birds and other protected species – not to mention the fantastic landscape. Heck cattle live together in a large herd, shaping the landscape. There are also viewpoints and information about them. And then there are the storks.

Next, head towards the Lippe River and onto the beautiful Lippe dike cycle path, offering lovely views. The Lippe Polder Park is perfect for a break. Cycling through the Lippe floodplain, along the dike, and always following the river, you'll cross the Lippe and head towards the Wesel-Datteln Canal. This is a true federal highway – exclusively for ships – and, after the Rhine, the busiest in Germany. You'll cycle along the canal for a while, cross the Lippe once more, and then return to Schermbeck and your starting point.

Just beautiful. I always find it like a little day vacation to drive along the canal. It doesn't matter which side. There is so much to see. Nature, bridge, water, locks and ships. In between, just let your feet dangle in the water during a break. Or rest at one of the many options and enjoy the view.
