Hiking

Werchow is the gateway to Calauer Switzerland. In no time you are past the Goldborn and through hell, up to the plateau and to the brick tower.

But it's worth pausing here and there: spotting a golden carriage between the iron ocher clouds in Goldborn ;-), taking a look at Calau from the Kuhringsberg, snacking on a few blueberries...

Climbing the Luckaitztal brick tower is a must: After 219 steps there is a wide all-round view of the treetops.

In Weißag you can eat buckwheat pancakes on Sunday afternoons, but: Before the tour, find out whether the inn is actually open and let us know if you want to eat pancakes (the yeast pastries need time to rise)! Gaumers Inn: Tel. 03541 2050

On the way back, it's worth stopping at the Napoleonstein (maybe you'll find the treasure?) and a detour to the Lugteich pond, with luck you'll meet a grass snake or kingfisher.

Please note that the brick tower has limited opening times:
April - October: daily 9.00 a.m. - 6.00 p.m
November–March: Tue.–Sun. 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m
When there is ice and snow or a storm warning, it remains closed!

Goldborn Spring, Calauer Schweiz

Highlight • Natural Monument

That was once the most productive source in Lusatia - lignite mining means that less water is now escaping. The natural monument is definitely worth seeing.

Hölle Ravine

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

This beautiful Kerbtal (red marking) is called "Hell" and is really fun to walk through: unspoilt, narrow and dark, almost a bit mystical. The only drawback: too short. At the lower exit there is an interesting information board that explains the ecological importance and the previous year's renaturation measures and points out the rarity of this valley shape in the region. The best thing to do is walk down here from the Kuhringsberg, where you can go straight down to hell at the junction. If you have any concerns, just send a candidate up and see how they fare below. I did exactly that.

Luckaitztal Brick Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

The wooden predecessor, which opened in 1999, was already a popular destination for tourist hikes in Calauer Schweiz and a well-known landmark of the surrounding "Plinsdörfer". Due to structural damage and vandalism, the decision to demolish it had to be made in 2014. The decision to demolish it also gave rise to the desire for a replacement building. The municipality of Luckaitztal also approached the town of Calau and found further support for the project. Under the set specifications of being able to build and maintain the new tower from a durable material, with a low-maintenance construction, at an affordable price, research came across an observation tower built in 2003 in Suderburger Land. After an on-site inspection in September 2014 by representatives from the municipality of Luckaitztal, the Altdöbern office and the town of Calau, the decision was made to build an identical tower, with appropriate local adaptations of the project, as a replacement building in Calauer Schweiz.

Fieldstone houses in the Plins villages

Highlight • Historical Site

In the Plins villages of Weißag, Zwietow and Gosda there are numerous fieldstone buildings to admire: houses, barns, gatehouses, walls. The building material was plentiful along the land ridge, an Ice Age terminal moraine.

Movement is important! Why?? I couldn't believe it when I read the article.
"Around 40 percent of adults said that they had put on weight significantly since the beginning of the pandemic - an average of 5.6 kilos."
We don't want to be there. So in the hiking boots and off he goes Peter, Heidi too.
The brick tower in …

The last part is very overgrown. It is best to take the path half right before the Lugteich to the Goldbornquelle and then back to the car park.

It could be summer, so no bikes, hiking is the order of the day. Off to Calau Switzerland. Beautiful hiking trails with many nice views.

Thanks to Hans-Peter and Heidrun, we dared to venture into the rugged mountains of Calau Switzerland. We already know Bucksche and Hohburger Switzerland and of course the Saxon one. Even if the end here at 161 m (Kesselberg), it was a nice and interesting loop. The views here are perhaps not that overwhelming, of course, but the Niederlausitzers have managed …

Today January 7th, 2024 to Calau Switzerland.
The starting point of the hike is the rest area near Weißag. From there you can easily walk to the brickworks tower. What does Goldborn do in between? I don't know it. From the brickworks tower we continued towards Kuhringsberg. However, we didn't climb it because of hell. What was interesting for us …

@Deleted User yes, it is hilly there and I have seen a lot of MTB trails. It's also worth taking a bike 😀

The main thing is not to just sit around - neither in the car nor at the desk! 😌

After a work assignment in the Elbe-Elster district, nothing much drove me home, but all the more into another flatland Switzerland near Calau.
I was particularly attracted by waypoints like "Schlucht" (Gorge) and "Hölle" (Hell). For Brandenburg standards, these are real …
