Ekerner Mill

Highlight • Monument

Very nice well-kept old windmill. It's not just the color that sets it apart from the others.

Querensteder Mill

Highlight • Monument

The mill, which was built in 1802, is the highest in Ammerland and offers space for your celebrations

The Querensteder Mühle is a three-story gallery Dutchman with a compass rose.
With the wind rose, the mill cap automatically faces the wind. The mill is about 25 meters high, based on the highest point of the mill cap. The wing flight is 23 meters.

The highest mill in the Ammerland looks back on almost 200 years of mill history:

In 1798 the houseman Johann Diedrich Diercks first planned to create an oil horse mill. Together with Johann Oltmanns, however, he then planned to build an oil and pearl barley windmill, which was put into operation in 1802.
As early as 1810, a tavern was added to the wind mill, which still exists today.
The mill caught fire three times, but was always rebuilt. During the Second World War, the cap was severely damaged by the war.

Oltmanns Windmill Westerscheps

Highlight • Monument

In Edewecht-Westerschepen is this beautiful windmill, which was built in 1888 and since 1900 in the possession of the Oltmann family, which still takes care of it today. The mill's technology is still intact and you can even see it up close. If you are interested, you can call here: Anna and Rolf Kaptein, Tel. 04405/272

Several landscape windows were created in Ammerland on the occasion of the State Garden Show 2002. The view of the Westerscheps windmill is also very nice from here.

Howieker Watermill

Highlight • Monument

The Howieker water mill was built in 1608 as a grain mill with an undershot water wheel by the Howiek farmers Dietrich, Oltmann and Gerd zu Howiek on the Ollenbäke. Since the watercourse had many turns and little gradient, the backwater flooded the adjacent meadows. That is why the residents are said to have pulled up the dam bulkheads at night and pierced the embankments of the mill dam. Despite the disputes, the mill operated for 300 years.

Late on Saturday afternoon, after the rain, we set off from Ocholt on the mill route, which officially begins in Bad Zwischenahn. There is more information about the tour here and you can download it as a GPX: ammerland-touristik.de/rad-aktiv/tour/muehlenroute, I got it from here @Ammerland Touristik.

A very nice tour. Unfortunately, I didn't include all the mills—I'll do that next time. Let's see if you can also visit some of them from the inside.

Journey of discovery to six different mills

The Ammerland landscape has always been shaped by windmills and watermills. When the mills flourished at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, 47 mills still existed, nine of which are still functional and can be visited today. The 47-kilometer route leads to six Ammerland mills, which could be preserved for posterity …

On the mill route in beautiful Ammerland, the first stop was the Howieker water mill, built in 1608. It is a little off the tour in a wooded area and also offers the opportunity to take a break or to explore more of the facility. Since 1947 the mill has been maintained by the Ocholt-Howiek local history association.

A weekend in the Ammerland Bad Zwischenahn. On Friday the first tour of the mill tour started right after the arrival. Fortunately there were only a few showers that we could wait in the many beautiful and sometimes very lovingly furnished refuges. Exactly at coffee time there was another shower, because we could wait in Café Müller with cake, cake …
