It is a continuous climb, nothing too strenuous but not shaded to the first coll. From here, a short, slightly more technical stretch to the 2nd coll and then a fairly easy last bit uphill …
A really nice walk that is quite tough in some places.
The first part is a road where the occasional car drove, but shortly afterwards you end up in a wonderful part of Spain.
The walk is tough and more than "average".
Less recommended with the dog. That little guy from below with a low center of gravity certainly succeeded, …

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Ascent to Penya Migjorn (PR-CV 212) from Xixona trail start and is there parking available?

The trail typically starts from Xixona. While specific parking details aren't provided, Xixona is a town, so parking options should be available. It's advisable to check local parking regulations upon arrival.

Is this trail suitable for beginners?

No, this trail is generally rated as Medium/High or Moderate-High. It demands a good level of physical fitness and experience in mountain hiking due to significant elevation gain and challenging sections, including minor scrambles near the summit.

What is the terrain like on the route?

The terrain is varied. It begins with paved sections, dirt tracks, and paths through fields. As it enters the Barranco del Choquero, it becomes a winding ascent. The latter stages are demanding, with steep, rocky sections and loose stones. Near the peak, there's an exposed stretch requiring light scrambling where hands are needed for assistance, and some parts involve less defined paths over rock platforms.

What natural features or viewpoints can I expect to see along the way?

You'll be treated to magnificent views from Xixona's castle at the start. The route leads towards the impressive vertical walls of Penya Migjorn, also known as Penya Roja due to its reddish limestone. You might observe the 'Forat de la Penya,' a large, shallow cave. The summit, known as Penya Migjorn Peak, and various points during the ascent offer spectacular panoramic vistas of surrounding mountains and the Mediterranean coast. The descent passes by the Cova dels Corrals and its cistern.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

Due to limited vegetation and sun exposure, it is highly recommended to avoid hiking on hot days. Spring and autumn are generally the best times to visit, offering more moderate temperatures for this strenuous hike.

Is the Ascent to Penya Migjorn (PR-CV 212) from Xixona dog-friendly?

The trail's difficulty, including steep, rocky sections and minor scrambles, along with exposed areas, might make it challenging for some dogs. While there are no explicit restrictions mentioned, consider your dog's fitness and agility before bringing them on this demanding route.

There is no mention of permits or entrance fees required for hiking the PR-CV 212 to Penya Migjorn from Xixona.

Is this a loop trail or an out-and-back route?

The PR-CV 212 is described as having a partially circular nature, allowing for a varied return, for example, via sites like Cova dels Corrals. This suggests it's not a simple out-and-back.

What kind of wildlife might I encounter on the trail?

The area is known for Griffon Vultures, which can often be seen soaring overhead, adding to the scenic experience.

What should I bring for this hike?

Given the trail's difficulty, sun exposure, and duration, you should carry ample water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), appropriate hiking footwear with good grip for rocky sections, and possibly gloves for the scrambling parts. Snacks and a first-aid kit are also recommended.

Are there any specific challenges or sections I should be aware of on the trail?

Yes, the most challenging aspect is the exposed section near the summit, which involves minor scrambles ('trepadas') where hands are needed for assistance, and there is a distinct sensation of verticality. Caution is paramount in these areas as a fall could have serious consequences. Also, be mindful of loose stones on steep, rocky sections.

Does the trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route also passes through sections of the El Camí IT5TR2 El Camí del Sud: de Dénia a Castelló de la Plana, Carrer de Sant Vicent, and Carrer de les Parres.
