Hiking

The Fort de Bèrnia (PR-CV 7) circular route plunges you into a landscape of contrasts, where rocky formations and panoramic Mediterranean views intertwine with history. The 18.4-kilometer trail will challenge you with 929 meters of elevation gain, leading you through rocky and uneven terrain, with sections that demand attention and good balance. A highlight is passing through the Forat de Bèrnia, a natural tunnel that transports you from an arid slope to a greener one, offering a unique and memorable experience.

For this demanding hike, which takes approximately 7 hours and 14 minutes, good planning is essential. The route commonly starts near Casas de Bèrnia, where parking options are usually available. Given the difficulty and duration, it's advisable to start early in the morning and carry plenty of water, especially during the summer months. Don't forget sturdy hiking footwear with good grip to tackle the varied terrain.

The Fort de Bèrnia, a 16th-century Renaissance fortress, is the historical heart of this route, offering not only fascinating ruins but also spectacular views of the coast and inland. The Sierra de Bèrnia is a Protected Landscape, underscoring its natural and cultural value, with flora micro-reserves and impressive geology. This route is ideal for experienced hikers seeking a combination of physical challenge, natural beauty, and a journey into the past.

Bèrnia Fort

Highlight • Historical Site

The fort of Bernia, built in 1562 by the royal engineer Juan Bautista Antoneli, was a clear and magnificent example of Ottoman Renaissance military architecture on the coast. In 1612, and due to its ineffectiveness, being far from the coast, King Philip III ordered its demolition.

From the fort, the arches, the moat, the bastion, the cistern, and the remains of the walls can still be seen. Its extent was 10 meters long by 110 meters wide. It has been declared B.I.C. (Bien de Interés Cultural) since 1997.

Explanatory panels show its former functioning and use.

Forat de Bèrnia

Highlight • Cave

Through a small advance you can go from the south side of the mountain range to the north side. The advance should be crossed about 80 meters in a low inclined position. The walls of the tunnel are roughly carved.

The hike is already borderline in May in the heat.
In addition, the paths go over several boulder fields and overall accuracy is required in many areas.
But still beautiful!!!

An introductory hike around the Sierra de Bèrnia with fantastic views of the coast. We went a little way up to the summit, but only until the via ferrata started (you can do it, but don't have to!). The scramble through the tunnel – the famous hole through the ridge – was spectacular. Great tour! 🔝

We left early on this beautiful sunny day to walk around the Bernia. Was tough for my untrained legs and the calves felt nice at the end. But it was fun!

Beautiful walk. A lot of tracking :) a challenge for people with a fear of heights because it is sometimes quite steep

the hiking time of just under 3 hours calculated by the Komoot app is absolutely WRONG.
The ACTUAL hiking time was about 5 hours !!!!!!
The STARTING POINT of this tour was possibly sponsored by the restaurant owner so that hikers could park and stop at his place.
Therefore there is an extra 1 KM hike (one way) to the …
