Cycling

Embark on the Cambridge to Royston loop, a difficult touring cycling adventure spanning 45.9 miles (73.9 km) with an elevation gain of 1247 feet (380 metres), typically taking around 4 hours and 35 minutes to complete. This route offers a varied experience through picturesque Cambridgeshire countryside and charming villages, featuring a mix of paved roads, cycleways, and some unpaved or compacted gravel sections. You will pass by notable landmarks like the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory and the expansive Wimpole Estate, providing a blend of natural scenery and historical sights.

When planning your ride, be aware that while many sections are paved, some parts, particularly the A10 path from Royston to Melbourn, have been described as poorly maintained with narrow, overgrown, and cracked surfaces, which might be less ideal for road bikes. The overall difficulty can vary depending on the specific route chosen, but this particular loop is rated difficult, suggesting you should have very good fitness. Consider the varied terrain and potential for challenging segments when preparing your bike and gear.

This touring cycling route is notable for combining historical and scientific landmarks with evolving cycling infrastructure. You can visit significant sites such as the Wimpole Estate and the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory, adding cultural and educational stops to your journey. Efforts are underway to improve cycling paths, including proposals for the Melbourn Greenway, which aims to enhance connectivity and create a more cohesive active travel corridor between Cambridge and Royston in the future.

Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory

Highlight • Structure

Radio interferometry started in the mid-1940s on the outskirts of Cambridge, but with funding from the Science Research Council and a corporate donation of £100,000 from Mullard Limited, a leading commercial manufacturer of thermionic valves.

Construction of the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory commenced at Lords Bridge Air Ammunition Park,[1] a few kilometres to the west of Cambridge.

The observatory was founded under Martin Ryle of the Radio-Astronomy Group of the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge and was opened by Sir Edward Victor Appleton on 25 July 1957. This group is now known as the Cavendish Astrophysics Group.

Wimpole Estate

Highlight • Historical Site

Stunning place, however the staff are a bit hit and miss about whether bikes can go around the estate, despite a new cycleway having been created.

Wimpole Gatehouse

Highlight • Monument

A magnificent gatehouse to a private house. One can get close to admire and photograph, but it is a private house and driveway. The bridleway 180 degrees from where these photos were taken and the area around here are worth exploring

Steeple Morden Airfield Memorial

Highlight • Historical Site

Plaque and memorial for Royal Air Force Steeple Morden. The airfield was operational during the Second World War; initially as a dispersal field for RAF Bomber Command; then used by USAAF Photographic Reconnaisance Group and Fighter Groups.
The airfield was closed and abandoned in 1946, returning to agricultural use in the 1960s.
The former airfield is virtually unrecognizable. A few single-width concrete farm roads, which are remnants of the perimeter track and runways are all that remains.
