Hiking
This hike takes you from the pretty Dorset village of Askerswell up to the summit of Eggardon Hill. One of the county's many hillforts, the hill offers epic views of the Jurassic Coast as well as across Dorset in every direction.
While you can park in a lay-by at the foot of the summit path, this trail makes the most of the area over 4 miles (6.8 km) while still being very manageable.
1. Park considerately in Askerswell and hike north along School Lane.
2. At the crossroads, continue straight over to take the bridleway to South Eggardon Farm.
3. Follow the bridleway north through the farm to reach North Eggardon Farm. The take the track eastwards to the base of Eggardon Hill and follow the bridleway around the base to the south east.
4. When you reach a bridleway/footpath crossroads, take the footpath leading north west – this takes you to the summit from where you can enjoy wonderful views in clear weather.
5. Hike back the way you came, this time continuing south east on the footpath to reach a lane. Follow the lane southwards then take the bridleway westwards back to South Eggardon Farm.
6. From the farm, simply retrace your initial steps to reach Askerswell.

What a beautiful walk! I'm ashamed to say that in the 20+ years I have lived in the area, I have never been up Eggardon Hill before. What a colossal oversight - it is glorious and highly recommended. The sun sparkled on the distant sea and the views across Dorset's rolling hills were amazing. We parked
