Hiking

Wallonia is famous for the countless castles and palaces - some of them even today in excellent condition. On this tour you will hike through the valley of the Lesse, a tributary of the Meuse, and on the way visit two perfectly preserved castles.

Starting point of your hike is the trail parking lot at the station Gendron-Celles. From here follow the course of the Lesse, which has cut in wide arcs deep into the slate and limestone slabs of the Ardennes. Soon you can admire a particularly beautiful rock formation on the opposite bank: the "Aiguilles de Chaleux". Twice you cross the river on narrow bridges, before you see the castle Walzin high above the valley. The castle is still inhabited today and can only be visited from the outside. Afterwards it goes uphill and with beautiful views of the valley to the next castle - the fairy tale castle Vêves is also open to visitors and can be visited. From Vêves, it is only a short distance to the starting point of the hike.

View of the Aiguilles de Chaleux

Highlight • Natural Monument

On the opposite bank of the Lesse River, the "Aiguilles de Chaleux"—the Needles of Chaleux—rise steeply into the sky. This dramatic limestone cliff is undoubtedly one of the most exciting and beautiful rock formations in all of Belgium.

View of Walzin Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the river bank you can look across to the “Château de Walzin”, which sits on a steep limestone cliff high above the Lesse. The castle is privately owned and cannot be visited, but the view of the fairytale castle alone is reason enough for this detour.

A breathtaking view over the valley, the farms along the river and especially the limestone cliffs in the shape of needles called the "Aiguilles de Chaleux".

Vêves Castle

Highlight • Castle

On the site of the Vêves Castle stood a fortified castle since 1230, which was completely destroyed in a fire at the beginning of the 15th century. A little later, the castle was rebuilt and the building is still in excellent condition. Since the 18th century, the castle has been owned by the counts of Liedekerke Beaufort, who extensively renovated the castle in the 1970s.

The castle and the individual rooms, furnished with original furniture from the 18th century, can be visited today.

Opening hours: The castle is open from the beginning of April until the end of November. You can visit it every day except Mondays and Fridays from 10am to 5pm during these months. In July and August, it is also open on Mondays and Fridays.

Beautiful walk that offers what has been said: beautiful views and two castles. I myself am very much into off-road and narrow paths. This hike does not meet those requirements. Especially the large first part looks more like a wheelchair path with a lot of asphalt. But then, at the end are the most beautiful parts of the entire walk …

Our fourth tour in the Belgian Ardennes, this time in the south near France in the Lesse valley. A wonderful area.

Very very nice walk, specially the passage alongside the river. You'll discover 2 Castels.
The tour leads from the starting point on the Lesse, where there is also a large paddle boat rental, first to Walzin Castle, which sits picturesquely on a rock high above the Lesse (but is largely cordoned off and cannot be visited).
Then it goes up through the forest to a spectacular viewpoint and continues along field paths and asphalted …

Beautiful walk. Very varied! Toads are easily accessible. As a result, the weight was bearable.
