Highlight • Trail

In this section of the hiking trail through the “Rhönhut” nature reserve, a wooden boardwalk has been built over a long stretch. This makes it easy to cross the protected moor and large bodies of water with dry feet.

The former inner-German border ran through the Lange Rhön nature reserve. There is another watchtower here. The piece of border fence was subsequently rebuilt. Further explanations can be found on information boards on site.

Schwarzes Moor Nature Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Natural Monument

On the nature trail through the moor – a two-kilometer-long boardwalk – you can discover rare animal and plant species. The Black Moor is the best-preserved and still-growing raised bog in Germany's low mountain ranges.

August 3, 2024,Rhön: Rundweg Schwarzes Moor und Grenzturm Grabenberg

During our previous stays in the Rhön, we had not yet had the chance to visit one of the moors. We wanted to change that today. The weather forecast was promising: sun, clouds and around 23 degrees. Rain showers or thunderstorms were not expected until the afternoon.
We set off from the 'Schwarzes Moor' car park and went on a …

After a leisurely breakfast and before we drive home relaxed, we decided to take a little round at the Schwarzen Moor - quite crowded there, but nevertheless very beautiful and absolutely worth seeing 😉
For the first time, we were also at the former inner-German border - still quite oppressive today 😳

We went on a guided hike through the Black Moor. We learned a lot of new things. It was very interesting, but even without a guide, the information boards were very well designed. Afterwards, we walked to the former border with a few remaining border fortifications. The weather held up great again.
