The Ruhr-Sieg cycle path connects the rivers Ruhr and Sieg over 113 kilometers and takes you over former railway lines and past the well-known Biggesee from Meschede in Sauerland to Kirchen in Siegerland. The route is beautiful, but quite hilly and therefore quite demanding. In two to three stages, however, this tour can still be mastered with pleasure by all cyclists.
You start in Meschede and soon set course for the Sauerlandring, which initially leads you gently uphill over the perfectly paved, former railway line. On the way you can experience the history of the railway up close, for example in the DampfLandLeute Museum in Eslohe, or enjoy how nature uses human structures for its own purposes: the famous bat tunnel near Fehrenbracht is a good example of this.
From Finnentrop you continue to Olpe, where you come to the shore of Lake Bigge. It is one of the largest reservoirs in Westphalia and perfect for a long break. Alternatively, the historic old towns of Attendorn and Olpe invite you to take a short detour. Further on, the Wendener Hütte, the oldest preserved charcoal blast furnace in German-speaking countries, is definitely worth a stop.
On the way to the historic city center of Freudenberg, you drive into the Siegerland and enjoy a nice, long descent. In Niederfischbach, it is worth making a stop at the Siegerland Cathedral before you tackle the last few kilometers to Kirchen an der Sieg. At the end of the tour, it is worth making a detour to the district of Herkersdorf, where you can see the 20-metre-high basalt formation of the Druidenstein cult site.
If you want to do this tour in several stages, Finnetrop, Attendorn, Olpe or Freudenberg offer places to stop. All information about planning can be found at http://www.ruhr-sieg-radweg.de.
