Hiking

The Hiwweltour Zornheimer height is also rather comfortable - about eight kilometers of track and only just under 140 vertical meters result in genuine hiking enjoyment. Along the trail, ten information boards provide you with a wealth of knowledge about the nature, history and agricultural use of the Zornheimer Höhe. There is also a wetland biotope and, of course, wide views over the Rheinhessian vineyards - a dreamy Hiworld tour is ready.

The Hiwweltour begins on the outskirts of Zornheim. The small village with the impressive church and the pretty Lindenplatz is worth a visit anyway - whether at the beginning or at the end of the hike, is your decision. In any case, you walk from Zornheim towards Jubiläumswald. Numerous fruit trees were planted here on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Rheinhessen. The trees are still small, but in the near future a magnificent orchard will be created here.

From the anniversary forest, the Hiwweltour leads through the wetland biotope Rohrwiesen. Then it goes over open fields and finally into the vineyards. Due to the hillside you have a particularly beautiful view of the surrounding countryside. The fabulous vision is also the reason why you can examine remnants of the Selzstellung, a military fortress from the period before the First World War. From the Selzstellung you wander still further through the vineyards, until you again in Zornheim at the starting point of the hike eintriffst.

Three Graces Fountain on Lindenplatz

Highlight • Monument

The three graces in the village square of Zornheim dance together and in a pentagonal wine press grapes to make must. The work of the Speyer sculptor Franz Müller-Steinfurth was erected in 2015 on the newly designed square and is now the central eye-catcher.

The Jubilee Forest was planted on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Rheinhessen in 2016. In total, over 340 fruit trees were planted on an area of 31,000 square meters - in the near future, a magnificent orchard meadow will be created here. At the moment the trees are still quite small. Nevertheless, a worthwhile place for a rest at the "table of wine".

Rohrwiesen Wetland Habitat

At the confluence of Kinsbach and Zornheimer Graben you will find several ponds and ponds, which together form the wetlands Rohrwiesen. Species-rich moorland meadows, single trees and thick bushes together provide an important habitat for rare animals.

Wonderful view over the vineyards of Rheinhessen. In the fall and in the deep evening sun, the landscape is deceptively reminiscent of Tuscany.

Selzstellung Memorial and Viewpoint

Highlight • Historical Site

The concrete remains on the edge of the Zornheimer mountain remind of a gloomy past. Before the First World War Mainz was expanded according to plans of the Supreme Army Command of the German Empire fortress. In contrast to earlier fortifications, not just a rampart was drawn around the city, but many positions were set up at strategic points in the direction of the French border. Altogether 89 fortresses formed the foremost front of the Mainz bastion and here you can examine the remains of one of these works.

With this Hiwweltour Zornheimer Berg I have hiked all currently active Hiwwelttouren at least once. A new one in Saulheim is currently being planned. On this tour you should definitely take a look at the chapel with its triangular panorama windows. But be careful not to get lost. After the chapel you have to go back a bit, otherwise you …

A beautiful late autumn walk in Zornheim. The Eckes Chapel is stunning in every season.

After we ended up in Rheinhessen by chance, we found the landscape worth exploring.
Now it finally worked!
Eating and drinking is excellent in the region and it doesn't have to be expensive.
For the Hiwweltour (Hiwwel are the hills) you first have to find the parking lot next to the Zornheim sports hall, after which the path is clearly …

I like this tour. Beautiful meadow paths - finally no muddy paths and at the end a wet brown something on the leash 🐶😄

I actually wanted to see the sunrise from Zornheimer Eerg, but then breakfast wouldn't have worked out...
Dreamingly quiet - the meadows still very damp - cold wind - hazy, but a wonderful atmosphere...
I love this nearby hike; it's beautiful in every direction and in every season.

Maybe I'll be able to see the sunrise in the fall...🙃

Nice tour, but unfortunately hazy, cool and the paths muddy ... reserved for spring (fruit tree blossom!) And / or autumn (discoloration of the vine leaves)
