Hiking

The starting point of this beautiful hike is the Viking Museum Haithabu near Schleswig. To immerse yourself in the past with the Vikings, a visit to the exhibition building is highly recommended. Here you can take your time to be impressed by the archaeological finds, the reconstructions, and the excellent presentation before heading out to the open-air grounds with the seven true-to-life reconstructions. Haithabu was protected by a semi-circular rampart, which you can still recognize very well today. People lived in wooden houses with wattle-and-daub walls and pursued their activities on narrow plank paths. For their ships, they had built a jetty into the Haddebyer Noor. A wide range of events regularly brings the old crafts and the world of the Vikings to life for you.

You leave the ring wall in a southerly direction, pass one of the reconstructed runestones, and reach the small wooden bridge over the Noor. It looks a little unreal and fragile, appearing like a mirage in the flat landscape, yet it is stable enough to allow you to cross to the other side. On the eastern bank of the Haddebyer Noor, you now walk to the Baltic Sea fjord, the Schlei. With a little imagination, you can imagine how Viking ships sailed here into the Schlei, then through the fjord, which is over 40 kilometers long, and finally to the Baltic Sea.

After crossing the dam, you turn back towards the museum at Odins Biergarten and Restaurant and soon reach your starting point.

Haithabu Viking Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

Here, at the narrow point between the Schlei branch of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, the important Viking sea trading center Haithabu flourished between the 8th and 11th centuries. The exhibition house impressively tells the story of this time with replicas and archaeological finds. Seven Viking houses were also reconstructed on the site, in which mediaeval life is shown very vividly.

The museum is currently open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (deviations are possible on public holidays) and the prices vary from 3 (children) to 9 euros (adults). In the Haithabu Café you can strengthen yourself afterwards and let the impressions have a lasting effect. The café is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Haithabu Viking Houses

Highlight • Historical Site

Highly interesting reconstruction of seven Viking houses found during excavations. The replica was built using historical craft techniques and materials. On narrow plank paths between the clay-plastered wattle-and-daub walls of the houses, you get a good idea of Viking life. In summer, there is a large event program that brings the village to life, allowing you to watch the "inhabitants" practice their old crafts or trade with them on market days.

In winter, the houses in the open-air area are closed.

Sigtrygg Runestone

Highlight • Historical Site

A wonderful, ancient document from the history of the time, which proves that runes not only had a cultic character but were also used as normal writing signs. The original is in the Wikinger Museum Haithabu, but the copy does not detract from the impression it makes.

Here you have to pass the Noor bridge between the Selker and Haddebyer Noor. A great place for a short rest. A very small section of the beach invites you to cool off your feet in the Noor water (depending on the season).

Today a short hike in Haddebyer Noor and to the Viking houses. Lots of nature, but not completely suitable for the Thule 🙈. Many stairs and the bridge have to be overcome 😃. But somehow it worked anyway. Visiting the Viking houses and the Viking Museum cost 9 euros per adult, we didn't do that. There was an absolute rush …

Beautiful, worthwhile tour around the Haddebyer Noor, can be extended if you take the Selker Noor with you! You pass the Viking village and Viking Museum Haithabu!de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikinger_Museum_Haithabu

From picture 5 to picture 42, it's a wonderful walk. Before that, everyone wants to go to the Viking village, which makes me wonder if that's something for children? 95% of them seemed visibly bored, screaming, and annoying everyone else ;-)

I can recommend Haithabu to anyone who is enthusiastic about open-air museums. Life a thousand years ago is recreated here as authentically as possible. Absolute recommendation.

I had been thinking for a long time about choosing a tour and consciously hiking it once in each season. Driving towards Noor today, I realized it's going to be this route! So experience winter today with a bright blue sky and bare trees!
Next time there in spring!

Today's hiking tour went to Schleswig, more precisely to Haddeby, where we took a walk around the Noor in bright sunshine.
