Hiking

Lake Ossiach is the third largest lake in all of Carinthia. The long, narrow lake is framed in the north by the steep slopes of the Gerlitzen Alpe and borders the mountains of the Ossiacher Tauern in the south. While roads run along the north and south banks, you can go hiking in untouched nature on the east bank. Here the Tiebelbach flows into the lake and forms an extensive moorland landscape. On the Slow Trail you can explore the Bleistätter Moor and enjoy the view of the lake from the observation towers. The hiking trails are very well developed and are also suitable for families with small children and strollers.

It is best to park your vehicle in the parking lot on the shore path in Steindorf. From here you walk just a few meters to the stone house of the famous Austrian architect Günther Domenig. Once designed as a residential building, it is now used as a museum about the architect, who died in 2012. You follow the hiking trail to the shore of the lake and into the Bleistätter Moor. Numerous species of birds, butterflies, bats and even beavers live here. So take your time to explore the special landscape. There are two wooden observation towers on the shore, which are also perfect as a resting place. Once you reach the south shore, the hike takes you away from the lake shore and across wide fields. You cross the Tiebelbach and walk back to the starting point of your hike with a wonderful view.

Tip: You can also easily travel to the Steinhaus, the starting point of the hike, by boat. You can find the timetable at http://www.ossiachersee-schifffahrt.at/.

Alternative: When you arrive at the south shore of Lake Ossiach, you can also turn right here and continue walking along the shore to Ossiach Abbey. From here you can then take the excursion boat MS Ossiach back to the starting point of the tour.

Domenig Stone House

Highlight • Monument

The renowned Carinthian architect Günther Domenig has set himself a personal monument here on the shores of Lake Ossiach. In his personal home, he fulfilled all of his design wishes and dreams. At first, the abstract concrete facade looks cool and forbidding, but if you look closely, you can see Domenig's intentions. He tried to depict the mountains of Carinthia in the gray walls. Get involved in the impressive building, because then you will recognize its creative masterpiece.

After the builder died in 2012, the stone house can now be viewed from mid-June to early September. The house is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. In addition, guided tours through the building are offered every Wednesday from mid-May to the end of October.

June 11, 2024,Kärnten 2024, Tag 4: Slow Trail Bleistätter Moor
Having become careless due to the dry weather, contrary to the forecast, we tackled the Bleistätter Moor Slow Trail after our return to Lake Ossiach. Unfortunately, the floodgates of heaven opened, which is why many of the pictures are rainy. But the moor with its many bird species was still worth a visit.

The Slow Trail Bleistätter Moor leads through the species-rich nature, landscape and European conservation area of the mouth of the Tiebel and offers insights into the habitat of around 100 different bird species, butterflies, bats and beavers. This easy circular tour (also suitable for Nordic walking and running) is very flat along the eastern shore of Lake Ossiach and leads …

The Slow Trails are family hiking trails through which you can experience the typologies of the Carinthian lake landscape. They stand for "slow motion" instead of "high speed" and offer leisurely, relaxed hiking that takes care of the landscape and yourself. They are well-maintained paths and therefore easy to walk on; at the same time they lead to scenically special …
