Lake Ossiach is the third largest lake in all of Carinthia. The long, narrow lake is framed in the north by the steep slopes of the Gerlitzen Alpe and borders the mountains of the Ossiacher Tauern in the south. While roads run along the north and south banks, you can go hiking in untouched nature on the east bank. Here the Tiebelbach flows into the lake and forms an extensive moorland landscape. On the Slow Trail you can explore the Bleistätter Moor and enjoy the view of the lake from the observation towers. The hiking trails are very well developed and are also suitable for families with small children and strollers.
It is best to park your vehicle in the parking lot on the shore path in Steindorf. From here you walk just a few meters to the stone house of the famous Austrian architect Günther Domenig. Once designed as a residential building, it is now used as a museum about the architect, who died in 2012. You follow the hiking trail to the shore of the lake and into the Bleistätter Moor. Numerous species of birds, butterflies, bats and even beavers live here. So take your time to explore the special landscape. There are two wooden observation towers on the shore, which are also perfect as a resting place. Once you reach the south shore, the hike takes you away from the lake shore and across wide fields. You cross the Tiebelbach and walk back to the starting point of your hike with a wonderful view.
Tip: You can also easily travel to the Steinhaus, the starting point of the hike, by boat. You can find the timetable at http://www.ossiachersee-schifffahrt.at/.
Alternative: When you arrive at the south shore of Lake Ossiach, you can also turn right here and continue walking along the shore to Ossiach Abbey. From here you can then take the excursion boat MS Ossiach back to the starting point of the tour.
