Hiking

The Pasterze is with a length of eight kilometers not only the longest glacier of Austria, but also of the entire Eastern Alps. The glacier is located directly on the northern slope of the Großglockner and slides down through the Mölltal. Although the glacier has been retreating for years, a visit is still an impressive experience. A hiking trail leads you very close to the glacier and you can clearly feel the icy coldness that emanates from it.

You begin your hike at the Glocknerhaus on the Grossglockner Alpine Road. First, you circle around the Margaritzenstausee and then slowly wander up to the Sandersee. Up here, the melting glacier water naturally accumulates before continuing to the Margaritzen Reservoir. The trail meanders along the shore to the funicular. Here you follow the path uphill to the glacier tongue. If the glacier's ice is too cold for you, you'll hike back to the cable car. Either on foot or by train it goes up to the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Höhe. From the elevated position you have a great overview of the Pasterze and the surrounding peaks. Above the glacier, the trail continues to climb and with each step changes the perspective on the Pasterze. At the viewpoint waterfall angle again expects you a special panoramic view, before you start the way back. You hike back to the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Höhe and along a narrow trail down to the Glocknerhaus.

Glocknerhaus Mountain Lodge

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Glocknerhaus stands in picturesque surroundings in the middle of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Due to its location directly on the Hochalpenstraße you can easily reach it in the summer months from Heiligenblut with the hiking bus. Not far from the Glocknerhaus, you will also find a large supermarket. More information about the Glocknerhaus at alpenverein.at/klagenfurt/berg_aktiv/huetten/glocknerhaus/glocknerhaus.php

Margaritzen Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

The outflowing water of the Pasterze glacier has been dammed in the turquoise Margaritzenstausee since the 1950s. The reservoir is used to generate electricity and is part of the Kaprun storage power plants.

Pasterze Glacier

Highlight • Natural Monument

Even on warm summer days, a cold wind whistles down from the glacier ice of the Pasterze. At the edge of the glacier, a sign marks the ice cream stall of 2010. Meanwhile, the signboard stands quite lonely in the rocky mountain landscape, while the glacier has already retreated significantly - a clear memorial to climate change.

With the Grossglockner High Alpine Road 🛣️, which is not without reason considered the most interesting, challenging, and scenically impressive pass (adventure) road 🏔️🤩, I and my "Mitsu" 🚗 fulfilled a not-so-small dream. It also played a significant role in my choosing the Hohe Tauern as my vacation destination in the first place. Thanks to the Summer Card 💳, we …

Super nice hike at high altitude, but from the Franz-Josef-Höhe it goes down steeply, then just when you want to get behind the rest of the glacier....we hiked further down, there were no places that were "difficult " would have been, although Komoot had stated so. Only the ascent at the very end, from the hut to the gallery, in …
